how do i move photos to an external hard drive?

From i photo:drag the picture that you want to move it into any folder then connect your harddrive and drag pictures to your harddrive

that does not work....been trying forever to get them to move, drag or export I cannot move a pic off my macbook pro...only to the trash!!!
