Using the iPad, as well as the iPhone keyboard, I cannot enter the German special characters (also known as Umlaut). The spelling correction sometimes does work, often it does not. I do appreciate the advice of the Apple experts

When typing, hold down the key for the letter you want o have the umlaut. after about two seconds, a window should appear giving you options for various accents and the like.
