Hello, after getting SBBOD a few times lately and v.slow page loading today, I decided to switch off then on again. Unfortunately it won't switch back on, just gives me the apple logo with a grey screen and an endlessly spinning timer :(
Apple support say it might need a new hard drive and to take it to the genius bar to find out the problem. Does anyone have any ideas of what the problem might be, please? Am gutted.

Take it to an Apple store or AASP as suggested. Bring your guts along.
Is the system more then 1 year old from date of purchase? If it isn't then I suggest you get to an Apple Genius Bar ASAP and then BUY Applecare extended warranty.
If it is older then 1 year from data of purchase then all repairs will cost you, it is out of warranty.

The OP indicates an OS of 10.6.6 which would make the MBP older than 1 year. The 2011 MBP's came with 10.6.7.
It sounds like it may be a dead hard drive. They tend to die about about 3 years of age. Do you have a good backup? New hard drives are about $50 to buy and 5 minutes to install. I don't know how much Apple charges to do that, but they are pretty reasonable on repairs from what I've seen on the forums.

Not sure about back up, does icloud count as back up? Seems a bit harsh that my beautiful little machine should give up and die after just a year :( ah well
