Cinebench results different from Mac Pro & Mac Pro PC

Hello,

I have 2006 Mac Pro 13GB RAM. I have added a AMD 5870 graphics card also I have just added Windows 7 onto another internal drive. I was doing this to play Battlefield 3.

I ran Cinebench on both my Mac OS and also the Mac Pro via boot camp 4.0 running Windows 7 64 bit.

The issue is that my Mac Pro - PC ran faster on these test than the PC on the OpenGL.

Why is this is and what can I do to speed up my Mac? Sorry have no idea how to do a screen shot on a PC.

PC RESULTS OpenGL 37.66 fps

MAC RESULTS OpenGL 29.64 fps

Snipping Tool for screen shots.

Apple AMD or standard PC?

MacPro 2,1 is still not EFI64 so installing Windows 7 64-bit was I assume 'extra' steps and work?

Not sure why on your primary question although you are using a card that your PCIe 1,1 slots can't take full advantage of.

Some scores to check yours against: http://www.cbscores.com/

What driver did you use from AMD? 12-4 or older?

Also, what is your WEI Index for both GPU scores?

When you took a screen shot you showed the CPU rankings.

Hello Hatter,

So many questions! Ok I'll try my best to answer them.

Its an Apple 5870 installed into a 2.1 Mac Pro , Just a plug and play.

The PC side was a leap of faith as I have only been a Mac user. Watched various Youtube vids and read many forums to get the thing working butit seems pretty smooth with no issues on performance.

Im running the latest 12.4 Catylst download for the PC.

My question was, why is my FPS higher when the machine runs as a PC over running as a Mac.

Also, what is your WEI Index for both GPU scores?

I believe it was 5.5, 7.9 for the graphics, 4.5 for the RAM reading and disk read. Ill have to check on that for all the details.

Thanks for the links I'll have a look through those. This was more of a learning expeience with, Boot Camp, PC, a video card and PC gaming.

I have had this Mac Pro from new and have various other new and old macs around (no iMacs, just laptops). I was trying this out to learn more whilst waiting for the new Mac Pro and its been a long wait now I have decided to upgrade. Although a 3.3 quad core would do me right.

Curious what about 3DMark 11 if you have run that.

Mine with i7 920 @ 3GHz and the AMD 6850

that would show some idea of frames and graphics.

Geekbench is also good on scores and memory bandwidth.

You threw me off with "Boot Camp, PC" which I translate as "running Windows on Mac versus running Windows on PC hardware" or close to that! <g>

Also wondered if you saved and used a PC Radeon 5870 as most find $449 to be overkill in price for not enough return on performance compared to just the 5770 from Apple. There are people using 6870s and other cards too.

And yes it is nice and fun and I think people should want to try to get a feel for how their setup runs.

Post a shot again of CINEBENCH but with "OpenGL" instead of CPU in the lower windows part.

I think Windows drivers have shown over and over they are probably better optimized, they have a lot of people and games forcing them to improve all the time, and games do and have driven technology. Take what you lean on the racetrack and try to apply to making cars safer, and better?

Ok so I ran the 3D mark II on the basic version.

I was not expecting miracles with this new graphics card knowing the machine is 6 years old. The pleasure of the Mac Pro is that you can move the drives and Graphics cards to future machines. I was hoping to do this with the 5870 as an investment.

Your mac does best with either 4 DIMMs (two on each Riser) or 8.

And with your setup I would pull that 1GB (2 x 512) which isn't doing much for the system anyway, if you need more than 4 x 1GB or 4 x 2GB (cost for the 8GB about $119 on Amazon).

Just double checking but do you have 2 x 4GB on the top Riser in slot 1 and 2, right? that is where they belong but the 3dmark score makes it hard to tell.

Another place to see an improvement is move the system (clone) to a faster boot drive too. That should help a bit.

And keep the air and fans on your memory to keep them running in the 60's (C) for long healthy life.

Ok I did another test with the RAM properly set out I believe, X2 4GB on the top and X2 2GB below and the 1GB removed.

Thanks for the input on improvements. I don't have any plans to get any more kit as I was hoping to get an SSD drive as the boot drive in my next Mac Pro and either use this 5870 card for the new machine or maybe sell it on if needed if and when Apple magically break make the 630+ days upgarde date.

Here are the results with the latest one on the right. Thanks again for your help on leting me explore my Mac Pro.
