My iPhone 3GS is displaying 'No Service'

Reseat your SIM card.

Reset the phone.

Call your wireless provider

My wifi signal is fine.

WiFi signal has nothing to do with your wireless provider.

I saw a similar problem at about the same time with my AT&T service. @Armstrong2, Who is your provider? I just figured it was the network's getting slammed with the iOS 5.1.1 download.

I reset my network settings and got service back within a few minutes.

You should not be able to download this update over cellular. It is over 43mb. I would never do an update over cellular in the first place.

I am also having the same problem here, post the 5.1.1 update on my 3GS. I have AT&T, 3GS model MB715LL. I'm currently on the phone with AT&T. They are baffled.

I think something may be wrong here...

AT&T just told me they've had a few calls like this today. They are now transferring me to Apple support. Hoo boy.

So if you are experiencing a no service. there are a few things you can try.

Power cycle- power off and back on - test.

Hard reset -hold home and power button until apple logo appears- release - wait until phone restarts -check

Reseat the sim card - test.

Reset network settings- Settings>general>reset >reset network settings - wait for reboot -test.

Reset all settings>settings>General>reset>reset all settings.

Restore the phone following- http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414

I've done 1 and 2 several times today, and AT&T just had me do the SIM card bit. I have a feeling the settings resets are coming up next. Thanks.

Ok well the setting resets arent too serious, no data is really lost except for like what the brightness was set to, or volume limit, background picture, wifi passwords.

Before you restore you can Call AT&T, power your device off, Ask them to remove your phone from your plan and re-add it as a troubleshooting step, Once re-added power the phone back up and test.

****NOTE NOTE NOTE

Keep in mind if you are GrandFathered in for a Unlimited Data plan make it Clear to them if you do remove the phone and re-add it you wont lose your data plan.

Just got off the phone with, I believe, a Senior Support guy at Apple. He suggests doing the full phone restore thing. UGH.

He also said mine was the first call like this he's had today.

Well, I just did a full reset to factory settings and restore. Still no service. >:O

Although...it looks like I temporarily have service (voice and data) when I'm NOT in the vicinity of a wifi network. Which, you know, happens all the time. >:O

I think this update to 5.1.1 bricked my 3GS. :/

Exact SAME problem here!!!!! I updated my iPhone 3 to 5.1.1 today, and I've had NO SERVICE ever since. I've chatted with AT&T online, and spoken to Apple (with my son's phone) and they have NO ANSWER for this. Full restore, reset all settings, we tried every thing. The Apple tech even told me "You'll probably have to buy a new phone now". Well, how convenient for Apple.... Sell a bunch of iPhone 3's at $0.99 and then render them all useless a few months later. DO NOT UPDATE TO 5.1.1

Same thing here with a 3GS 16gb

Finally got mine to work again by turning airplane mode on, resetting the network settings, then turning airplane mode back off. Don't know why it worked, but it did - had to figure that out on my own, and it was just pure luck
