Q: Considering upgrading to FCPX.

I've got 6 and haven't edited in more than a year. Have a job coming up. Wondering how big the learning curve is for X. Going to be editing in HD. Any advice is helpful. If I can get by with FCP6 I'd be happy not to worry about figuring a new version in the short-run.

Details: 15" macbook pro 5.1, Mac OSX, 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB memory

Thanks.

    steem. really steem.

When we hobbyists got the new paradigma four ( ! ) years ago, I was one of the biggest critics - no timeline? Never! Meanwhile, I would never like to go back, and the jump from iMovie >> FCPX was more than comfortable.

    but ...

due the huge differences (only the name is the same - diff. GUI, diff. concept, diff. handling, ... all different), I would never suggest to do a real job as 'entry'; use your old app and after doing so, try to re-enact the same in FCPX.

before doing so: spend some time ... some more time, reading the manual, watching podcasts, tutorials, Larry Jordan's videos etc etc. - FCPX has a different CONCEPT! not just some new 'knobs'. If you go the hurdle in your mind, FCPX is 'better' .... imho.

Only a couple of things to add to Karsten's great advice:

    • There is a 30-day trial available, so I'd suggest try before you buy. FCP X is very different.

    • Make sure your graphics card is supported: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664

    • You'll probably need more RAM

I jumped from FCP 6 to X and yes, it is not easy, if you are "wired" like me on the classical FCP. There are alot of things that are easier, but also alot of easy things that are very difficult for a Beginner, until you figure it out.

My advice, don't upgrade and use it straight into a time-stressed project. Do your Project in FCP 6 and PLAY with FCP X in parallel if you like.
