Apple 10.6.1 software update fails over and over.

I recently installed an ATI 5770 on my Mac Pro 1,1, works perfect in 10.6..4

We have another Mac Pro 3,1, whose 8800GT card died, so we replaced it with another ATI 5770.

We cant upgrade the OS from 10.6 to 10.6.1 until we reach 10.6.4, all of the updates are failing.

The installation failed. An unknown installation error occured

We are not able to upgrade the OS not even to 10.6.1, and on my machine I had no such problems.

Any help or if anyone has experienced these "upgrade" problems, is greatly appreciated.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.

Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list. Post the messages from the last installation attempt, starting from the time when you launched the Installer or Software Update.

Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

Thank you.

We need to be at 10.6.4 fot the 5770 to work, and we do not want to go higher because of certain applications that we need to keep the version as low as possible, ideal at 10.6.4, which is the setup of the rest of the machines here.

What boggles me is the fact that the same procedure worked for other machines, some older (MacPro 1,1).

Thank you for your help Linc, much appreciated.

May 8, 2012 1:05 PM in response to MNaranjo

you need 10.6.5 or higher for the 5770 to work properly.

That means you want to be at where OS X was out in mid 2010 or earlier.

What about 10.6.8? you miss on all the latest security updates for one.

that means you have apps that have not been updated in two years almost let alone Lion.

May be turn the focus to why you can't update beyond 10..6.4. I recall threads about 10.6.4 causing issues and the graphic drivers were causing trouble in CS for one thing.

May 8, 2012 4:47 PM in response to Linc Davis

Linc, you were absolutely correct. It just so happenned those certificates expired on March the 23rd, that's why they worked on our prior machine, and not now.

Grant, thank you so much, the combo update worked perfectly.

Mad Hatter, I will look into upgrading the OS for those problems you mentioned. We run old Avid Media Composer systems, and since we are working abroad traveling, this is what we have to work with. Thanks for the help, you seem to have helped with every issue I have ever posted.

The great thing is that we can have a sales pitch meeting tonight and use the machine to show the media.

Thank you all very much for your help, you saved our *****.

Just for the sake of information, 2 Mac Pros (1,1 / 3,1) running OS 10.6.4, with upgraded ATI 5770's, confirmed working, dual monitors working AFTER the Snow Leoprad Graphic Update 1.0

Apple 10.6.1 software update fails over and over.
