No Wi-Fi connectivity after upgrading to iOS 5.1.1

I have a new 16GB iPad Wi-Fi model. Since I got it, it ran flawlessly, on all Wi-Fi networks.


Today, I upgraded it to 5.1.1

  • It worked fine at work on a Linksys based Wi-Fi network
  • Came home, and tried to go online, through my Time Capsule 2TB model
  • The iPad connects to either 2.4GHZ or 5GHz -- but I can't get online.
  • Safari isn't able to surf, and all the apps that need connectivity -- are not online
  • I've tried to reset the network settings, tried rebooting, tried rebooting the Time Capsule, etc...
  • Nothing works.

My MacBookPro works fine, so it's not the network. Something is definitely broken with 5.1.1 and the way it plays with Time Capsule.


Any tips?

Tried all that, and even downgraded to 5.1. Still having issues, but connecting to other routers works fine. So the iPad 3 is just not liking my Time Capsule, while other devices on my network are 100% fine.


Working with Apple on this directly, via debug logs. 5.1.1 did something to the iPad's Wi-Fi, that even after downgrading back to 5.1 -- it's not having much success.

Small update.


I downgraded to 5.1, and it didn't help.

This morning, I upgraded back to 5.1.1, came back home, and all is good.


So this was a strange behavior either between my iPad and my Time Capsule, or my Time Capsule and my router, etc...


But to those curious how to downgrade to 5.1, it's very simple:


Get the IPSW for 5.1, for your model iPad. For example, here is a link:

Then, in iTunes, option-click on the Restore button, and it'll prompt you to choose a file to restore.

Choose the IPSW file that you've downloaded, it'll check it, check against Apple's servers, and flash your iPad.


You'll now be at 5.1 and you will LOSE EVERYTHING. So backup first.


For me, it didn't do the trick, so I just upgraded back, and for some odd reason -- I'm in good shape again...

Not sure where you see four bars for the Wi-Fi strength indicator.

I get to see the symbol for maximum strength shown on that page:

Even if your Wi-Fi router is up and running, this doesn't mean that it's actually connected to the Internet.

Did you check this?


Try the following:

- reset the iPad: hold Sleep/Wake + Home buttons until the Apple logo pops up

- reboot the Wi-Fi router

- choose "Forget this Network" for your network on the iPad

- now check whether the iPad discovers your network, then re-enter the data for your network


For the upcoming test phase make sure you're within a few feet of your Wi-Fi router.

Yes, the curved bars on the wifi assistant page are the "bars" I am referring to. It's always been my understanding that, just like the linear AT&T bars to the left of it that the number of the curved bars lit-up indicate your relative wifi signal strength. After the 5.1.1 update my curved bars move between one and and the max number often even if I'm stationary and there's no change to my network.

Prior to the update it was stable at the maximum curved bar count.

What you did not mention is the distance between the iPad and the Wi-Fi router, also whether there are any obstacles between the two and whether you have changed the position of the Wi-Fi router.

You may notice a drop in signal strength of the Wi-Fi signal beyond as little as 10 meters when using an iPad.

Any obstacles in between will of course weaken the Wi-Fi signal even more.

Ok, let me explain this again. I can be sitting at a table with a perfection motionless iPad. My Wifi signal strength will indicate as "full" according to the curved bars...and it can fluctuate anywhere from one "bar" to "full" within seconds. It's never fully "full" like it was before the update. Before the update I could sit at the exact same location (my dining room table) and it would register "full" bars for the wifi signal and it NEVER dipped below full. Now it does so all the time.

Nothing has changed in my network settings. No obstacles have been introduced into the environment that were not there before 5.1.1.
