Do you have iMovie open? Is the camera turned on? Have you clicked on the Import Icon?
Hi, yes to all of those - the Import icon gives myself on the Facetime camera - no others available.
The guys in the iMovie Forum might have more answers:
It depends on what Mac you have and what version of iMovie. You may need to use Firewire.

Hi RRFS - thanks for your help. I have iMovie 11 and a very recent iMac intel.
I'm going to source a 4pin to 800 firewire and try that, a 4pin to USB failed so I guess it is a case of working through the known fixes.

and the answer was...
Go to the Apple store and purchase 4pin to 8pin Firewire cable and 'Bobs your uncle' as we say here.
It has to be Firewire, USB does not work.
Thanks for the clues.
For anyone else out there, I had the exact same camera and problem.
Running iMovie 11, I read between the lines on the previous suggestions and rerouted my firewire from the external drive, camera directly into the computer. Problem solved.
I'm sure that on previous versions of iMovie I coud connect via the external, perhaps that was just for supported cameras.
Regardless, the Sony DCR-PC5E will upload on an iMac running OSX 10.7.4 and iMovie 9.0.6 if the firewire is routed directly between the camera and the iMac.
Hope this helps someone.
I realise this is an older discussion, but I have just come across it as I have the same camera model and a MBA with thunderbolt, I sourced a firewire cable, a 8-4 pin converter to plug it into the new apple thunderbolt connector, however this doesn't seem to do much. When you connected your DCR-PC5E did it immediately show up on the iMovie import window? Any other tips much appreciated. Thanks, Elias.
Hi Elias,
I tried various connection cables but...
I went to the Apple Store and with the Firewire cable the DCR-PC5E was immediately 'recognised' by iMovie.
Camera directly to cable...
Best - Derek
