why can't i see the picture on apple tv when playing mp4

I have mp4 movies and I would like to see them on my tv using apple tv, however when I transfer it to my apple tv using wd 2go pro or air video only the sound comes out of the tv no video. Can you help me?

Make sure it is fully compatible. If converted what did you use?
