I have reset the SMC twice on my iMac 24" (early 2009) and my fans still run at full speed, but only after I've been away from my computer for a while. It never happens while I'm using it. Any suggestions? My Apple Care plan ran out a few weeks ago and so I can't call in without paying.

Shut down your mac.
After the screen goes completely black, take the power cord out on the iMac side and wait for 15 seconds.
Put it in the mac again and reboot it.
This is based on what an Apple support employee said.

Try iStat Pro and see what temps are being seen by the system.

I know this won't fix it but it might allow you to see which sensor might be acting up.
Have you tried a PRAM Reset? Again just fishing.

I'll give the PRAM reset a shot tonight.
Run Apple Hardware Test. I suspect you will get a sensor cable error from one of the sensors (for example the hard drive sensor cable).

PRAM Reset did nothing... it's almost 3 AM here and my computer just whirred to life out of sleep mode with fans at full blast. :/
I tried to run AHT, but D and cmd + D did nothing and I don't have install discs since my system came pre-installed and I've since upgraded the OS twice... I suspect a sensor cable problem, but can't prove it. Is there any way to run the test besides the methods described on the support pages?
As I said to X423424X, the Hardware Test never initialized using either method. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong; I tried holding it through the whole restart, releasing and depressing again, and just holding after the computer sounded like it had rebooted (fans beginning to spin, powering on, moving parts moving, etc.). I tried D and cmd D. I suppose since my Apple Care ran out, perhaps AHT is no longer available to me?
The "trick" to all the boot key sequences is to push the keys immediately after you hear the boot chime. So put the D then. According to this use the option+D (not command+D) to use a internet version of AHT.
I believe the PRAM reset may have kicked in... I'm not sure. It hasn't happened in about two weeks, so I guess it's fixed. I did download that activity monitor for my Dashboard, though, and that's been a nice little tool.
