Parallels "Unable to connect to CD/DVD 1"

Hi, all.

Initially when I installed Parallels, the CD/DVD drive worked fine. At some point, without me upgrading s/w or knowingly changing anything, Parallels stopped being able to recognize the drive. I get this error:

"Unable to connect CD/DVD 1.

A file or device required for the operation of CD/DVD 1 does not exist or is used by another process, or you have no permission to access it. The virtual machine will continue running, but the device will be disconnected."

I've tried what I can find to try from Googling this problem, but no luck.

I have a MacBook Pro, running MAC OS 10.6.8, and Parallels 7 (running WinXP 32 in the VM).

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it!

The first one helped me when I saw the problem after reconfiguring my USB hubs. My external HP DVD drive showed up twice in the Physical CD/Drives list. I changed to the Default, then after that the HP drive showed up only once, and I could then reconnect to it.

I had exactly the same problem. After reading this entry i decided to do a test to take the cd drive out of the equation.

Insert the CD into drive.

Open a terminal window.

type: sudo umount /dev/disk2

This may be another device for the windows disk, so check first with df -k command.

Next create an iso image of the windows disk.

type: dd if=/dev/disk2 of=win7.iso

When starting virtual system point CD to iso image instead of cd drive. This worked for me and Win 7 installed.

I think there is a problem with parallels (more likely) or Mac os/x with CD in some releases. I am Parellels 7 and OS/x 10.8.2.
