You can try force quitting the Mail app followed by resetting your phone: double-tap the Home button, locate Mail at the bottom (swipe if necessary), tap and hold the icon until it wiggles, tap the minus sign to close it.  Now reset your phone: hold the on/off and home buttons until you see the Apple logo (ignore the off slider that appears first), then release.  If this doesn't fix things you will probably have to delete the mail account from your phone, then log into your account on the webmail site for your email provider and delete anything in the outbox or draft folders, then recreate the email account on your phone again.

iPhone 4S recovery from large email that worked for me.

    -Go to Settings.

    -Turn on Aiplane Mode.

-The message will stop trying to send.

-You can then go to your outbox and delete it.

-Dont forget to turn off airplane mode.

    HERE IS THE BEST FIX!!

    Hello everyone,

I had this exact same issue on my iPhone 6S Plus with an email I sent from my Gmail account that was stuck in the Outbox for many hours. NOTHING I did worked to get to the point where I could "edit" the email to swipe it away and delete the email that was stuck.

In order the get to the "edit" option I first tried putting the phone in airplane mode to break the wifi and cellular connection and that did not work. I then tried powering the phone off and that did not work. So too was a hard reset, which also did not work. Desperate after 2 hours, I actually deleted the Gmail account entirely and that did not work.  Finally, I resolved the problem by doing this...

    1.     Put the phone in Airplane Mode to terminate the wifi and cellular connections.  LEAVE THE AIRPLANE MODE ON WHEN MOVING TO STEP 2

2     Then, do a hard reset by pressing and holding the home button at the same time you hold down the power button. Wait 5 seconds or so until the phone turns off, resets entirely and powers back on.

    3.     Once the phone is back on, LEAVING AIRPLANE MODE ON, go back to the outbox and "edit" and delete the email entirely.

    4.     Turn Airplane mode OFF once the previously stuck email has been deleted and you are good to go.

Brilliant - thank you. I had an e-mail stuck for ages, every time I powered off and on it arrived in my work inbox but was still stuck in the outbox with the pinwheel spinning. This fix solved the problem.

    Fantastic fix-

I had the 'spinning wheel of death', a backed up outbox for over a month, and had to manually re-send each new outgoing email. Meanwhile, the intended recipient of the stuck email finally admitted to receiving an empty email with the stuck email's subject line every day since my original attempt. This fix took 15 seconds and worked immediately. Many thanks!
