Syncing itunes w iphone 4s

HELP!! I have an HP mini and I am trying to sync my itunes with my iphone 4s. It has been on step 2 of 6 for the past 2 hours, how long should it take to completely sync? I have uninstalled and reinstalled itunes and still it is taking forever. Is this normal? Is there a step I am missing somewhere? I am not the most patient person in the world so this is driving me crazy, I am all about instant gratification. Any advice would be helpful!

Assuming you have Windows:

  1. Quit iTunes.
  2. Start an elevated command prompt (Start Menu>All Programs>Accessories>right-click "Command Prompt">choose "Run as Administrator")
  3. Once in the command prompt, type "netsh winsock reset" and press ENTER
  4. Reboot your computer
  5. Restart iTunes
  6. Connect your phone and try syncing again.

If this doesn't fix it you probably have a corrupt iPhone backup from a previous sync that must delete it. To do this go to iTunes Preferences, on the Devices tab you will see a list of your backups. Click each one and click Delete Backup. Then try syncing again.

Cancel it. You can update later if you wish by connecting to iTunes and clicking on Check For Updates on the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings. Let's solve the syncing problem first. The backup step shouldn't take more than a 5 minutes (and often doesn't take more than a minute); if it goes longer then it's probably stuck again so cancel the sync as you did before.

You're welcome. One final tip... before updating your iOS, be sure to do two things:

  1. Import your photos to your computer (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083)
  2. Back up your contacts, either by syncing them with Address Book or with iCloud (Settings>iCloud, turn Contacts to On)

Losing photos and contacts are the two most common issues I see from users who update or restore their phones.

If the contacts in Address Book are up to date, try replacing the contacts on your phone with the contacts in Address Book. To do this:

  1. Without connecting your phone, open iTunes on your computer and go to Preferences. On the Devices tab check "Prevent...from syncing automatically".
  2. Connect your phone to your computer, go to the Info tab on your sync settings and confirm than your have checked to Sync contacts with Address Book. Then, further down under Advanced: Replace information on this iPhone, check Contacts. Click Apply at the bottom to sync your phone.
  3. After syncing go back to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and re-enable automatic syncing.
  4. Sync you phone again to see if it syncs normally now, without getting hung on syncing contacts.
