Temporarily disable your Mac's firewall/security software and then try updating again to see if that makes a difference.  It could be blocking a connection from iTunes to Apple's servers.

I assume you are running the latest version of iTunes at 10.6.1?

I am using 10.6.1 and I tried what you said, but it gives me the same message. It tries to download and pulls up a progress bar, but quits before it does anything.

It shows the message 'there was a problem downloading the software for the iPod ipod. The network connection timed out. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later.' what do I do?  The internet is working fine.

So you turn off the Firewall in the Security preference pane of System Preferences?  Are you running any other sort of third party antivirus/security software such as Sophos or Norton?

What type of Internet connection do you have or what is the advertised upload and download speeds?  It may be that your connection is too slow.

I turned off the antivirus and it still doesn't work. It shows that it will take anywhere from 1 hour to 70 hours. It changes constantly.

What type of Internet connection do you have?  Have you tried downloading and installing the update while connected to a different network?

    Owen,

    Try this:

Head to /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/iTunes-backup.rsrc and move this file to your desktop. Next relaunch iTunes and see if the problem is resolved.
