"Restore" limited info from Time Machine?

I bought a MacBook Pro and am selling my iMac. I would like to keep all of my iMac data (which is backed up onto my external hard drive) and only restore passwords, preferences, etc. to the laptop but not the 10,000+ photos, songs, and documents. Could I keep the data in the Time Machine, restore only limited info to the new laptop, then continue using the hard drive with Time Machine?
