I just phoned HP about this. They confirmed MacIntel are not supported yet and could not give a release date for a new driver. The pace of driver developement at HP encourages me to think the scanner is toast. Better sell it to a non intel user.

I'd be surprised if HP develops native Intel drivers for any older model... usually, the try to sell you new hardware with transitions like this.

Epson seems to already have a Universal version of Epson Scan - it was released 02/20/06 and says "Intel & PowerPC".

I have a Scanject 4370. I finally got it working today. I downloaded the latest version from HP. Even though it is universal, it still wouldn't work. So I selected the scan application, get info, then select it to run in Rosetta - it worked like a charm.

Scanjet 4570 works fine on my Mac Pro with latest HP software, not tried it on my MBP, but have no reason to think it won't work

Are there applications other than Acrobat and Photoshop Elements that I can use to replace the HP software with my ScanJet 5590?

I don't see the option to open in Rosetta in Get Info (although the application is listed as a PPC app). How can I make that option appear?

This elegant open source program has hundreds of OS X drivers for obscure and obsolete printers. I'll never buy another NEC or Lexmark printer again because they habitually abandon driver development. With Guttenprint I don't need them and my printers function flawlessly.

Thank you for the suggestion, but I am looking for an intel-compatible scanner driver for an HP 5590 ScanJet. Gutenprint only has printer drivers, and SANE does not have a driver for the 5590.

I am unable to get the option to run under Rosetta to appear under Get Info with my HP Software. Any ideas?

I do not know how much time and energy you have to throw at the problem, however, I gave up on HP and went to Epson. Epson seems much more Mac responsive in their development, and frankly, their software is really good. I picked up a Epson 4490, and it rocks. You might want to try one, and see if the aggravation with HP goes away.

I also have a 4490 but the buttons on the scanner don't work, Epson said they're not support w/ Mac. Any experience with this?

I have an HP scanjet 4670 and am also having problems. At first I could not even get my intel iMac to "see" it even though it was in the dock...it would not open. Then I douwnloaded the new 8.4v and thought all was great, as I was able to get a scan, but when I tried to change the location for storing the scanned images, the entire thing just froze up and I had to force quit (three times) I uninstalled a second time, but have decided not to re-install yet. Wondered if anoyone had discovered a solution for hte 4670 problems yet.
