My iPod Mini cable doesn't connect with my new MacBook Pro

I have an old iPod Mini (c. 2006?) and have just bought a MacBook Pro but the connector from my ipod doesn't fit the firewire port (cable seems to be larger than the port). Do I need an adaptor? Is there a new cable I can buy?
