Anti-virus patch

Please forgive my ignorance if I'm posting to an incorrect community and/or category. Am so new to all this.

Yesterday, I received an up-date email from Apple (**I assume it was Apple) marked "critical" regarding installing a patch as a precautionary measure against the most recent MAC virus. I had to leave early and wasn't able to compete the installation and clicked on "install later." Now I cannot find where to resume installation.

I've checked the "install sofware" and it indicates that the most recent software is up-to-date, but is dated about a week ago. Does anyone know where to locate resuming the installation?

**I'm fairly certain it was from Apple; I'm embarrased to admit I didn't check more thoroughlyas I was in such a hurry to complete a deadline. Note to self - be more careful.

I don't think this is from Apple. They wouldn't email you in that case, it would have just appeared in Software Update. What email address did it come from?

be careful is right:

Identifying fraudulent "phishing" email

Did you supply a password? If you did change it immediately, in everything associated with that password.

To say it would be highly uncharacteristic of Apple to send an email regarding a "patch" for an alleged "virus" that could affect a "MAC" would be the understatement of the century. I think it would be more likely for the Earth to reverse its rotation and fling us all into space.

The reason you can find no downloaded file - partial or otherwise - is that there was no download, only an attempt to deceive you into supplying confidential information.

OK, Apple's Software Update runs periodically. It's probably normal.

To determine the Software Updates you installed, open System Preferences > Software Update and select the tab for "installed updates". It will provide a summary of what you installed and when it was installed. Updates to Microsoft Office, if that is what it was, will not appear if they did not originate from Apple.

If you specifically remember the update dialog indicated it was "critical" this sounds very characteristic of Microsoft. Everything's an emergency with Microsoft. It was probably an update for Office.

Apple's Software Update does not require any additional interaction, other than the need to restart your computer for updates that require it.
