NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 Kernel Panics/Freezes in Lion & late Snow Leopard

I've found some other reports of these freezes scattered about the forums, but usually other people come in and post something about unrelated video cards. So this thread is specific to NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 running OS X Lion (10.7-10.7.3), to avoid confusion and cross-polination of different issues.

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: iMac

Model Identifier: iMac9,1

Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo

Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz

Number of Processors: 1

Total Number of Cores: 2

L2 Cache: 6 MB

Memory: 8 GB

Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz

Boot ROM Version: IM91.008D.B08

SMC Version (system): 1.37f3

NVIDIA GeForce GT 130:

Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce GT 130

Type: GPU

Bus: PCIe

PCIe Lane Width: x16

VRAM (Total): 512 MB

Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)

Device ID: 0x062e

ROM Revision: 3370

Since upgrading to Lion I have had many issues with crashes and kernel panics characterized by the following symptoms, listed here in detail so that people can find them when they search:

  • Pixellation - colored pixels appear in different areas of the screen, in seemingly random bunches.
  • Mosaics - squares appear redrawn in the wrong part of the screen. Sometimes these squares are large, other times tiny.
  • Recovery - sometimes the system recovers once it starts doing these. Other times it just keeps going until it freezes/panics.
  • Kernel Panics - I've only had the "grey screen" appear once or twice. Usually there is a complete system lockup before this can happen, and I have to reboot the system manually.

Some solutions/attempts to solve:

  • Turn off Energy Saving - This is horrible for the monitor and can lead to burn-in, but I found that many of my crashes occured when the system was trying to recover from "screen sleep". So now I run a screen saver instead, which doesn't seem to trigger it as much.
  • Screen Saver - Sometimes I can "refresh" the system by turning on the screen saver and then coming back. Other times, this doesn't work and the pixellation/mosaic remains. Sometimes I can't even initialize the screen saver at all (in which case a total freeze usually occurs right after).
  • Rebooting - seems to clear things up for a while, but inevitably, the problem resurfaces.
  • Running Windows - Not really a solution, but I have had absolutely no issues with this behavior while running Windows 7 on this same machine (under Bootcamp).
  • Downgrading to Snow Leopard - I have not attempted this, but I've read others say that their crashes went away when they did. I would like some more concrete evidence on this if anyone has it.

My diagnosis so far:

OS X Lion's NVIDIA driver kernel extensions (kexts) seem to be faulty with this GPU. The Windows drivers for this GPU work better on Apple's own hardware than OS X Lion's. Anectodal evidence indicates that Snow Leopard's drivers (at least up to 10.6.3 – more confirmation needed) do not display this issue. I can confirm that this never occurred in Snow Leopard until Lion was released and I upgraded to it.

My request for help and information:

  • If you are running this GPU (GeForce GT 130) and OS X Lion, please contribute to this thread offering any solutions you may have or, at the very least, listing your hardware and GPU profile.
  • If you can, post crash logs so that we can compare common issues (NVDA Resman seems to be a huge recurring kext in the crash logs, for instance).
  • Post screen shots or pictures taken of the pixellation (colored pixels) and mosaic (squares drawn in the wrong place) phenomenon, so we can build a body of evidence regarding this issue. I will continue to update this thread with the same.

I feel Apple has ignored these issues for far too long, and required too many people to simply purchase new computers and new GPUs. If we can build a solid body of evidence regarding this specific issue, it will be a thread that Apple Support can be referred to.

I have a late 2009 27 inch iMac and at the time bought the fastest processor and graphics card with, tons of memory and a 2GB HD. I have freezes frequently that started with the change of OS. Usually it occurs with just the browser running intensively. I took it to an Apple Store in January 2012. It cleared all of their hardware tests and they considered the case resolved despite my protests. I clear caches regularily, purged any apps I don't use and run disk utility on a regular basis to make sure all is well. I used the increased fan speed which helped a little but does not solve the problem.

Now my iMac is out of the extended warranty period, I feel cheated by Apple and not quite ready to spend more $$ for a new iMac. I have used Macs for decades and never, ever had a problem that could not be resolved. Please Apple, fix this issue. iMacs are not meant to be disposable after 3 years. Stand by your product and support your consumers.

I've been getting on ok with SMC Fan control since my post a number of weeks ago but in the past 2 days have had 2 kernel panics. At least I get that - the panic only rarely registered before. I don't want to clog up the posts with lots of logs but at the end of the post are the first few lines (which I believe are the relevant ones?). I also attach pictures of the corruption of the screen that is associated with this problem ... you know the behaviour anyway, the screen flashes a couple of times and the display randomly rearranges itself. All I had running these two days was, I believe, a combination of Chrome, Keynote, Papers, Pages and maybe a couple of Finder windows. This morning, I just had Chrome and Keynote running, with a few Finder windows.

Sorry for quality of images, I had to take them with my phone ... here you see artefacts in the Finder window:

In this one, you see that the GPU temperature is only at 33Âş, so hardly taxing the system.

Clearly this is very worrying and an indication that the situation is worsening. I think publicity is the only way to go. Feel free to use these images / panics to build a case. I'm not going to even bother going to Apple as long as they're in denial about this, so if we can get enough exposure, maybe then they'll listen.

I am pretty sure that Apple techs don't read these forums. They probably have some kind of bot to filter junk, but I think the main issue is making the proper people aware of the issues.

Since the problems did not start until the software was updated, that means that many people who never update their software are probably just fine. Other folks do not use graphics programs that would cause issues. I could play music just fine on mine prior to the fix.

Then, for those folks who did take them in to the Apple store, it would depend on the particular "genius" who happened to take the case...how they reported it and what they did to fix it. I showed the "genius" who took care of my issue this forum and he told me that there were a lot of "trolls" on the forums trying to make Apple look bad and that they generally didn't pay much attention to them.

I told him that over the years I have had Apple products, the forums have been a great help to me and others. But, he did pay attention when he saw all the panic logs, etc.

He noted on the case that my computer passed ALL the hardware tests...even his advanced tests. He only replaced the card because I asked him to.

Personally, I don't know who to contact at Apple to make them understand that this is an issue. Many people probably just go buy a new computer and never consult the forum or even bother to look into the issues themselves.

For me, I didn't buy Applecare, so I figure the $180 is less than what Applecare would have cost to begin with. There was someone on this thread who had a contact at Apple...I sent an email to the guy documenting my case, but have not seen any more posts about that, so I don't know what happened.

Mar 8, 2013 10:24 AM in response to David Portela

Apple got in touch with me. They requested I send them some system diagnostics, which I did. Now they have offered to repair the iMac, and we're going ahead with that process (finding a place near me, then they have to contact them, etc.). I will keep this thread updated with what happens, but kudos to Apple for taking an interest and following up on it. I hope they are indeed able to fix the issue.

For those who are also experiencing the issue, take photos, like DrTrishy above, to show the distortion you are experiencing on the screen. DrTrishy's issue seems to be exactly the same as mine, with the same mosaics and distortions. If enough people post photos of this happening, it will be pretty good evidence that there is a common problem in the hardware that needs to be fixed by Apple, even if no longer under warranty.

For those who are upset, I understand where you're coming from. But the most constructive way to deal with this is to report the problem and document it as well as you can, as I and others have done on this forum. Making Apple hate posts and Facebook pages won't get you anywhere and honestly, will be a waste of your time and energy...I know you must have better things to do than feeding anger, yours or otherwise.

Will let you know how all of this works out.

Mar 8, 2013 3:24 PM in response to David Portela

That last post keeps getting deleted. I guess Apple frowns upon referencing any of their employees when referring to discrepancies. Guess they would rather have a no name no face ghost to blame for our strife.

Mar 9, 2013 9:14 AM in response to Wren_fr

@Wren_fr, what would help us all is if you did what I asked @Stetch – "Can you post photos of the artifacts you see on the screen, when they happen? Do you have snippets from logs after crashes, like DrTrishy posted? The more you can document what's happening with your machine, the better."

The more we gather information that points to a recurring problem on specific hardware, the more weight this issue will have.

Mar 10, 2013 5:12 AM in response to David Portela

Hi David

The image below is what I commonly see as my iMac crashes with SMC on and below that is the result of one of the crashes that occured using a gpu stress test with SMC off. Without SMC on I get 8-10 crashes per day without using any graphics heavy software, although I have found that opening a finder window will crash it, as below. Hope this helps
