NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 Kernel Panics/Freezes in Lion & late Snow Leopard

I've found some other reports of these freezes scattered about the forums, but usually other people come in and post something about unrelated video cards. So this thread is specific to NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 running OS X Lion (10.7-10.7.3), to avoid confusion and cross-polination of different issues.

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: iMac

Model Identifier: iMac9,1

Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo

Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz

Number of Processors: 1

Total Number of Cores: 2

L2 Cache: 6 MB

Memory: 8 GB

Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz

Boot ROM Version: IM91.008D.B08

SMC Version (system): 1.37f3

NVIDIA GeForce GT 130:

Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce GT 130

Type: GPU

Bus: PCIe

PCIe Lane Width: x16

VRAM (Total): 512 MB

Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)

Device ID: 0x062e

Revision ID: 0x00a1

ROM Revision: 3370

Since upgrading to Lion I have had many issues with crashes and kernel panics characterized by the following symptoms, listed here in detail so that people can find them when they search:

  • Pixellation - colored pixels appear in different areas of the screen, in seemingly random bunches.
  • Mosaics - squares appear redrawn in the wrong part of the screen. Sometimes these squares are large, other times tiny.
  • Recovery - sometimes the system recovers once it starts doing these. Other times it just keeps going until it freezes/panics.
  • Kernel Panics - I've only had the "grey screen" appear once or twice. Usually there is a complete system lockup before this can happen, and I have to reboot the system manually.

Some solutions/attempts to solve:

  • Turn off Energy Saving - This is horrible for the monitor and can lead to burn-in, but I found that many of my crashes occured when the system was trying to recover from "screen sleep". So now I run a screen saver instead, which doesn't seem to trigger it as much.
  • Screen Saver - Sometimes I can "refresh" the system by turning on the screen saver and then coming back. Other times, this doesn't work and the pixellation/mosaic remains. Sometimes I can't even initialize the screen saver at all (in which case a total freeze usually occurs right after).
  • Rebooting - seems to clear things up for a while, but inevitably, the problem resurfaces.
  • Running Windows - Not really a solution, but I have had absolutely no issues with this behavior while running Windows 7 on this same machine (under Bootcamp).
  • Downgrading to Snow Leopard - I have not attempted this, but I've read others say that their crashes went away when they did. I would like some more concrete evidence on this if anyone has it.

My diagnosis so far:

OS X Lion's NVIDIA driver kernel extensions (kexts) seem to be faulty with this GPU. The Windows drivers for this GPU work better on Apple's own hardware than OS X Lion's. Anectodal evidence indicates that Snow Leopard's drivers (at least up to 10.6.3 – more confirmation needed) do not display this issue. I can confirm that this never occurred in Snow Leopard until Lion was released and I upgraded to it.

My request for help and information:

  • If you are running this GPU (GeForce GT 130) and OS X Lion, please contribute to this thread offering any solutions you may have or, at the very least, listing your hardware and GPU profile.
  • If you can, post crash logs so that we can compare common issues (NVDA Resman seems to be a huge recurring kext in the crash logs, for instance).
  • Post screen shots or pictures taken of the pixellation (colored pixels) and mosaic (squares drawn in the wrong place) phenomenon, so we can build a body of evidence regarding this issue. I will continue to update this thread with the same.

I feel Apple has ignored these issues for far too long, and required too many people to simply purchase new computers and new GPUs. If we can build a solid body of evidence regarding this specific issue, it will be a thread that Apple Support can be referred to.

I did a clean install of 10.5 months ago & the problems stopped altogether. I ran iTunes visualizer, streams some live sports opened loads of apps & left running for nearly 2 weeks under the watchful eye & constant email and phone call reporting back to apples David (read back a lot of pages) who mysteriously got moved by Apple to another department. He agreed it was a software issue as soon as I ran soft-wear update the problem came back. He also said the kernel panics may have caused damage or weakening to some of the hard-wear (the graphic card & hard drive). He told me the issue was with the soft-wear & hard-wear departments I had to keep sending him logs. After no contact a while on the date he was due back from his holiday, I was told he had moved departments & the new apple contact said my last log said my graphic card needed replacing. No wonder after months of testing & kernel panics. But no free replacement, she wanted me to pay. Even though I had spent hours of my own time trying to help apple solve this issue being their Guinea pig. I also told David I was not happy still running the iMac until it the soft-wear issue was solved as I did not want to damage the hard-wear.

As soon as mavericks came out I did a clean install & upgraded to mavericks. The iMac runs a lot better, but I did have screen pizulation using iMovie to tidy up a small 3 minute iPhone video of the kids coming down a water slide on holiday yesterday. But not a complete crash. The iMac has also slowed down to snail pace a few times with the spinning ball, but left for a few minutes has come back to life. This is better than it restarting itself all the time for no reason kernel panics just opening a web page or a email etc, & screen going completely wacky with parts of pictures freezing or just not where they should be for no reason.

By the way i'm typing this on my new 2013 haselwell iMac which has no issues so far. My GT130 iMac is now basically iTunes jukebox & kids use only, until I can travel the 2 hour journey to an Apple store to get repaired. I use my new one for the important stuff like work.

So after dealing with "our" collective problem for what seems like an eternity I finally broke down and called apple.

The way I did this was to go thru the apple website and select contact, i then entered my imac serial number and phone number, since my apple care had expired I had to request an exception and a reason for that exception, which I chose "screen flickering". I was giving a two minute wait period, and after a minute I was contacted by an apple tech. I told him what the issues were and also mentioned this thread, he then proceeded to run me through the usual "solutions", to which I replied I had already tried and that it wasn't working. I told him that I had already replaced the nivida geforce gt 130 card and that my current OS was ML and I was still having lock-ups and screen artifacts. I asked to speak to a higher up and he politely obliged me.

I was then contacted by the higher up guy who told me to upgrade to mavericks since I was running ml, which I did and it failed to fix the problem, in fact it made it impossible for me to even boot up to the home screen. I was starting to get artifacts on the white apple screen which had never occurred before, so after multiple try's of trying to get to the boot screen the tech gave up and had me take photos of the screen glitches and email them to him.

He told me that because the upgrade he suggested made my computer unusable, he would waive my repair fees to get it fixed. I take it in tomorrow to get the logic board replaced and I will let everyone know how it turns out. I will also mention this thread to the tech when he calls to get an update in a few days or so.

He did mention that he would bring this issue up to the engineers and try to get a driver update since he thought it sounded like a software as opposed to a hardware issue.

We all need to take action and call apple and be persistent about it, that is the only way to solve this problem.

It would be great if the guy you were talking to did follow through on this. I just had another kernel panic and sent it to Apple with a short description of what I believe to be the problem (kexts making the graphics card run too hot in SL/ML). I also sent a link to this thread and alerted them to the fact that there is a collection of evidence here, from panic logs to screengrabs and video. I guess I need to feel like I'm doing something!

Do you think your new logic board will have the ATI card? I would imagine that getting a logic board that has the same graphics chip will have you going around in circles unless they do something to sort the core problem.

For the sake of completeness of information, here is the latest kernel panic. Admittedly I had ok uptime* on the iMac since upping the revs on SMCFanControl, but I worry that I'll just need to keep upping those revs to achieve stability.

*When I say 'ok uptime' I had one kernel panic in the first 3 years of having this machine so it's not any great achievement that 'ok uptime' now means a couple of weeks without a panic.

I took off work on Friday and after backing up all of my files, reinstalled 10.5.6. It took me 4 tries, but I finally got it installed then updated to 10.5.8. I reinstalled some previous versions of some of my SW, including Premier and Soundbooth and After Effects.

On Sunday I managed to edit a clip I shot a few years ago, edited the audio and cleaned up the color along with a few resizing changes. No crashing, no pixelation, nothing screwy. Yes, I have to use a depreciated browser and lost some cool features of newer OSes but I have stability again... At least for now.

I had the same problem a long time, is a problem with the temperature, say that previous versions of OSX this was more tolerant to high temperatures, this is the solution most simple... (there are other paid options, but this is excellent it is free and open source) www.eidac.de "smcFanControl" 😀 Tested for a week, pass take breaks every 30 minutes to none... but you must try it... So just a quick update on my 09 imac, it's been in the shop for roughly a week now and so far they have had to replace the logic board, graphics card, and the fan. I would suggest not running yours fans at full blast as it will cause it to become unstable as in my case. Too everyone who's warranty is expired and are having trouble with apple fixing the problem heres what you can do, if you have recently purchased a new osx (mountain lion or lion or mavericks even though that one is a free update) call up apple and tell them it's caused your Mac to crash. Even if you haven't recently purchased the osx tell them that's the problem, do not upgrade to mavericks I repeat do not upgrade to mavericks, get in touch with a higher up, they are the ones with the power to waive any fees. They will try every thing to fix your computer, so you tell them that's its not fixing the issue, they should then waive your repair fee. Honestly the only way your going to fix your Imac is to do exactly what I just said. Also mention this thread repeatedly, help your fellow brothers and sisters out because we all know how f ing frustrating this is, good luck everyone.

Make sure to request an exception on the contact page and have apple call you, and make sure to mention this thread!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apple has officially restored my faith in there brand. Got my 09 Mac back two days ago and everything is on point, it's running like a champ with no issues. I really hope I'm not jumping the gun here by posting this so soon but I just wanted everyone to know that there is hope for us yet.

So just do what I did in my last post and let apple take care of the rest.

Hopefully this is the last post I have to make on this thread. Good luck y'all

If it is anything like what's happening to me, you are likely to have the same issues reappear. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but on my side, I'll be taking the computer in for a third replacement of the grafic card... The only good news is it has been covered by Apple all the way after the first replacement (which I paid for). Since then, the issue keeps coming back. As mentionned earlier in the post, the grafic card has been replaced twice (so far) and the logic board once. every time the computer seems to be working fine as long as I do not use it for anything "graphic intensive" such as using imovie or iphoto. But after an hour or so of movie edtion, the artefacts and pixels reappear, leding inevitably to a system freeze and restart. Apple care is asking me to have the grafic card replaced once more, since the last replacement is withing the three month warranty for the replacement card. I wonder though how long will this ballet go on. I would strongly suggest that you test your card thouroughly following a replacement to ensure the issue is not reappearing, since if the problem resurfaces after the three month waranty period, it may be harder to receive assistance on this...

Interesting enough, the technician I spoke with at the repair shop wasn't surprised to see me back with my machine as acording to him, 2008-2009 24 inches imacs have a history of being "bristle" especially in the grafic card department...

I encourage you to keep this post alive, as an updated feed of our efforts in resolving this issue.

My iMac continued to get worse and worse the last few months until it was virtually unusable without running SMCFanControl at high speed pretty much all the time. I finally couldn't take it anymore and broke down and bought a new 27" iMac. It's a breath of fresh air, if not all that different from my old Mac which *should* work fine. Very frustrating, but I suppose exactly what Apple wants.

That said, I'd like to give my parents my old early 2009 iMac. So I tried downgrading to Mac OS X 10.5 after erasing and zeroing the hard drive. After installing all upgrades, etc. in 10.5, I tested the machine by running 10 Youtube videos at once. The computer performed admirably, and I saw no hint of screen pixellation, artifacts, or freezing.

So I got brave and installed 10.6. Within minutes of booting into 10.6 I got the "glittery" pixellation trails in a horizontal line across the lower portion of the screen.

So, I popped the original discs with 10.5 back in and reinstalled 10.5 again. This time, I also got the artifacts in 10.5!

So I did an SMC and PRAM reset (4 chimes) and tried again. Seemed better so I tried the YouTube test again. Everything looked good. After I had that running for a while and the machine was getting quite hot (as measured by Temeperature Monitor) and the screen was still looking good, I decided to reboot, and try to use the computer for mundane tasks at the same time as running a YouTube video. Sure enough, after a few minutes, a small amount of glittery pixellation occurred.

I've shut the computer down and left it sitting a couple of days. I may try zeroing the hard drive again and reinstalling 10.5 from scratch. I can't imagine zeroing the drive will make any difference, but it is the only thing I did differently in my first attempt, which *appeared* successful (maybe I just didn't push the machine hard enough.)

In any case, 10.5 is much, much, much better on this computer than later releases are, but it does **not** cure the problem as others have reported.

I'm hoping to still find a fix so I can give my parents the computer (they're still on the bendy-necked iMac G4!) without worrying that it will fail on them.
