NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 Kernel Panics/Freezes in Lion & late Snow Leopard

I've found some other reports of these freezes scattered about the forums, but usually other people come in and post something about unrelated video cards. So this thread is specific to NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 running OS X Lion (10.7-10.7.3), to avoid confusion and cross-polination of different issues.

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: iMac

Model Identifier: iMac9,1

Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo

Processor Speed: 3.06 GHz

Number of Processors: 1

Total Number of Cores: 2

L2 Cache: 6 MB

Memory: 8 GB

Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz

Boot ROM Version: IM91.008D.B08

SMC Version (system): 1.37f3

NVIDIA GeForce GT 130:

Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce GT 130

Type: GPU

Bus: PCIe

PCIe Lane Width: x16

VRAM (Total): 512 MB

Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)

Device ID: 0x062e

Revision ID: 0x00a1

ROM Revision: 3370

Since upgrading to Lion I have had many issues with crashes and kernel panics characterized by the following symptoms, listed here in detail so that people can find them when they search:

  • Pixellation - colored pixels appear in different areas of the screen, in seemingly random bunches.
  • Mosaics - squares appear redrawn in the wrong part of the screen. Sometimes these squares are large, other times tiny.
  • Recovery - sometimes the system recovers once it starts doing these. Other times it just keeps going until it freezes/panics.
  • Kernel Panics - I've only had the "grey screen" appear once or twice. Usually there is a complete system lockup before this can happen, and I have to reboot the system manually.

Some solutions/attempts to solve:

  • Turn off Energy Saving - This is horrible for the monitor and can lead to burn-in, but I found that many of my crashes occured when the system was trying to recover from "screen sleep". So now I run a screen saver instead, which doesn't seem to trigger it as much.
  • Screen Saver - Sometimes I can "refresh" the system by turning on the screen saver and then coming back. Other times, this doesn't work and the pixellation/mosaic remains. Sometimes I can't even initialize the screen saver at all (in which case a total freeze usually occurs right after).
  • Rebooting - seems to clear things up for a while, but inevitably, the problem resurfaces.
  • Running Windows - Not really a solution, but I have had absolutely no issues with this behavior while running Windows 7 on this same machine (under Bootcamp).
  • Downgrading to Snow Leopard - I have not attempted this, but I've read others say that their crashes went away when they did. I would like some more concrete evidence on this if anyone has it.

My diagnosis so far:

OS X Lion's NVIDIA driver kernel extensions (kexts) seem to be faulty with this GPU. The Windows drivers for this GPU work better on Apple's own hardware than OS X Lion's. Anectodal evidence indicates that Snow Leopard's drivers (at least up to 10.6.3 – more confirmation needed) do not display this issue. I can confirm that this never occurred in Snow Leopard until Lion was released and I upgraded to it.

My request for help and information:

  • If you are running this GPU (GeForce GT 130) and OS X Lion, please contribute to this thread offering any solutions you may have or, at the very least, listing your hardware and GPU profile.
  • If you can, post crash logs so that we can compare common issues (NVDA Resman seems to be a huge recurring kext in the crash logs, for instance).
  • Post screen shots or pictures taken of the pixellation (colored pixels) and mosaic (squares drawn in the wrong place) phenomenon, so we can build a body of evidence regarding this issue. I will continue to update this thread with the same.

I feel Apple has ignored these issues for far too long, and required too many people to simply purchase new computers and new GPUs. If we can build a solid body of evidence regarding this specific issue, it will be a thread that Apple Support can be referred to.

OK left overnight. Restart around 10 am Monday March 22nd 2014

after about 2 hours Imac frooze then bottom half of screen went black, with top half showing website in safari but flickering like a strope light. Nearly had a eperleptic fit! Wife did a video of it on her iphone to show apple.

Left for 15 minutes same. Was worried it was going to destroy itself. Had to hold rear power on button down to restart. Left asleep, went outside to do some work. Came back in about 15.30. Used Messages itunes & safari till 16.10 when clicking on a link in Safari, Imac shut itself down for no reason. When it restarted itself without me touching it, I got the grey screen with wait or touch any key, "You have a Problem" Message.

I know I have a problem for about the last 2 years!!!! It Generated a Kernel Panic report on restart, to send to Apple.

This is two days after new graphic card was fitted. Apple have confirmed I will get a refund & can keep the new graphic card. But don't seem very keen on me taking it back for repair again. (Its nearly 5 years old when it becomes Vintage and they won't touch it) So I have booked another Genius Bar appointment at The Apple Store Bullring. Will let you know what happens.

Apr 9, 2014 10:57 AM in response to Drunken Hobo

Apple this time actual used my imac when on test. (Last time they just left it running.) I got a email please ring. I rang. We have managed to recreate your problem. It is unusable. " Do you know why it happens." We have a idea, as you live so far away and this has been going on for so long, please can you come back to the apple store where you can collect a new imac in replacement. RESULT after months of telling them it was unfit for purpose. So I'm one happy bunny. Got it today. Don't know what will happen with old imac. Hope they get some testing done to solve this issue. Only downsize is i've got to run a softwear update as it came with mountain lion preinstalled. Also will have to by a £25 firewire to thunderbolt adaptor, to get my external hard drive to plug in.

Aperture will not work for long on this iMac rendering near useless. My loss. As far as the Apple Corps "geniuses" in NYC are concerned there is no issue. They put it all on Nvidia which offered a replacement but added the Nvidia offer expired after five years (with no notification). So, Apple put an inferior graphics archectecture into their product and have no respons-ability. BTW my iMAC crashed while writing this as it did just prior while I was using Aperture and iWeb (yeah yeah I know iWeb). It is NOT a heat issue as the temp was only 101 degrees F. The graphics card welded into the logic board is the problem. Cannot be fixed and both corporations have no incentive to offer replacement unless the law of the land (where ever you are) forces them to do so. In the USA that can only happen with an expensive class action law suite.

But what do I know. I'm just a dumb customer with no money to buy a new computer and dependent on this one to make the crumbs I do.

Just an update.... It is obviously a graphics HARDWARE issue. After updating to 10.9 my system became almost unusable. I took it into the local authorized apple repair center and they confirmed the issue. For about $150 + 40 labor they replaced the GT 130 graphics card (Apple prices). This is not a bad repair bill for a 5 year old system.

I had added RAM (8GB for OWC) to the system and reverted back to the smaller 4 GB apple ram for testing. The system above also has an upgraded RAM slot.

The system checked out fine and I took it home. Within 24 hours it would not boot and hung at an ivory screen with a band of lighter dots (sparkly white) across the screen. Back to the repair shop where they declared the graphics card as DOA and replaced it again (Apple paid for the second one).

It has been back and in use for a few days, seems to run fine under Mavericks (10.9.3). I have run several graphics intensive programs and it has not locked up, restarted or crashed. I will update if this continues or changes. If all is well in about a month I will try going back to the larger RAM.

Lets be clear about this. This thread is for the early 2009 iMac 24" that has an NVidia GT 130 graphics card.

If you have a model that has a "welded" GPU then this is a separate problem. The NVidia GT130 graphics are NEVER soldered to the mother board but is a plug in module.

This model (early 2009) came with 4 possible graphics cards:

GeForce 9400M (with shared memory)

GeForce GT 120

GeForce GT 130

Radeon HD 4850

The problems listed here are almost exclusively the 3rd card. I would guess that you might have the GeForce 9400M which is a lower speed, lower power laptop graphics set. But I don't believe that is soldered to the Intel motherboard.

The GT 130 module from Apple is part # "661-4990 VIDEO CARD G94". It can be had for less than $200 commercially. Searching for that part number gives <http://www.macpalace.com/661-4990-card-video-nvidia-geforce-gt130-w/512mb-gddr3. html>

The "MacTracker" app will help clear up the differences between models.

@celloist, it is probably more on the intermediate level of repair. Look at the guides for replacing parts at iFixit and OWC. You need the suction cups to pull the front screen off and remove the display panel. And a bunch of torx drivers. A large antistatic clean area for storing the display to keep it from collecting dust while you work on the rest of the machine. I think it is equivalent to getting in to replacing the hard drive. I had the local apple certified tech on campus do it for $40 labor (and the part was $40 less since he bought it through Apple than the one listed above) so it was essentially a freebie.

Just an update, I had my Nvidia GT130 board replaced. The Apple replacement part died after about 2 hours of use. Replaced gratis by Apple and the machine has run without crashing for about a 3 weeks. This replacement did resurrect a machine that was in such bad condition that it was unusable. It was crashing about every hour of use. Now to put back the OWC ram and get the machine fully functional.
