Q: IOS 5.1.1. update bug (Volume Control)

This thread concerns IOS 5.1.1. update and the subsequent loss of volume button functionality and use of internal speakers.

Please can someone help from the mac team!

It's not a jailbreak phone. only purchased in early April on O2. Updated to 5.1.1. yesterday morning and now the volume buttons are virtually redundant!. Here are the symptoms;

  1. When the volume buttons are pressed on the home screen i get "ringer" and the speaker symbol appear but nothing more (ie. +/- volume)
  2. When playing back from iTunes with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  3. When i playback Youtube content with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  4. With headphones plugged in sound is audible and volume buttons work.
  5. Whilst using voicemail, (no headphones connected) i can play the message through the speakers and control volume using side buttons.

What's the deal Mac Support? I have restored the phone twice and also given the headphone jack a good blow with Servisol Duster 101.

Thanks, P

I couldn't wait any longer, so took my phone to the Apple store today and they replaced it with a new one. It was purchased in December, so still under warranty.  The Apple guy said he's seen a few phones come in with the same problem and they replaced them all with a new phone.

Was that your first replacement? I wonder if they'll allow a second one as I used one back in december due to a radio issue :/ (I'm also having this volume control issue)

Mine is very inconsistent though because the speaker will randomly work for the tune in radio app, completely stopped working for music app, works sometimes for imessage, always works for phone calls and call-ringtones.

Earlier I couldn't see the volume bar when I adjust my ringtone volume but now it's showing again. I'm going to just schedule an appointment with Apple since I use my speakers too much to wait for a fix (if there even is a legit one)

Yes this was my first replacement. And my volume was pretty inconsistent when it came to text messages coming in, but my phone would always ring and I used to be able to see the volume bell but not the last few days. It was so strange. The Apple guy said he thought it was more of a hardware issue with the speaker which he has seen it on several phones after the recent update. Good luck!

Thanks! And I know it can't be water damage, since I've taken very good care of the phone and haven't had the dreaded toilet splash or the concrete death drop lol

But I'm afraid that even though the phone is covered for a year and I personally can't think of anything I've done to harm the phone, that they won't give me anymore free replacements. But we'll see! I'll report back on what happens with my situation

Guys I found the solution from other forums. Just plug your device to a pc, wait for about 10 minutes  then your sound will go back to normal. I have tried this method twice and it worked everytime. Hope it helps

It worked when I first plugged the iPhone 4S to my MacBook. Problem is, volume control disappeared again. This is crazy, but glad that you did this and it worked for you.

Interestingly enough, a friend of my friend suggested I try cleaning the bottom 30-pin contacts with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol. Well long behold, I've been issue free for over a day now. Hopefully it stays this way

My phone developed the same symptoms after using my headphones. I found a post where users were having the same problem with Macbooks at one point. Their solution was to play a Cd on the device and to repeatedly plug and unplug the earphones about 10 to 15 times. I did this and it worked for me. I know it sounds weird but...

On my iphone 4 cdma, if i run A music app (download pro), i can then adjust my volume and exit the app. The volume remains at the level i set it at. If at the springboard (desktop) and press the side buttons, it shows the ringer volume. It's a programming error. Shouldn't be a tough fix for them but someone from the inside would have to initiate the call to the firmware staff. -jd-

Hello there.. i have an iPhone 4 32gb that i updated to ios 5.1.1 . First it was working flawlessly, maybe one week and the device lost the volume cntrol functioality these are the symptoms:

1- volume buttons do not work and no volume bar appears at all.

2- mute switch is not working at all.

3- the device is ALWAYS on vibrate even if the you turn the mute switch on.

4- no unlock sounds or keyboard clicks.

5- volume control availible through headphones only, but the phone volume buttons still dont work even with the headphone plugged in.

I have restored it as a new device to 5.1.1 without any jailbreak but the problem persists!! it is very annoying,, please help

I had the same exactily problems, mine was woking for couple of hours ater I did a restoration or if I charged it using a computer. They are still saying it is not a software problem though. I was very lucky my contract expires next month so they just gave me a new one but I am terrifying to update to a new filmware because the problem started just after I updatded to that 5.1.1 filmware too. ...

Hi there, same problem happened to my 3-month old iPhone 4S and nothing seemed to work. What I did was connect my phone to my MacBook to charge. Did that two days in a row and now the volume control is working. I suppose you just need to connect it to a PC with iTunes and it will work. Hope that this solution will end your volume problem.

I had exactly the same issue happen yesterday. Totally out of the blue! As som posters on have said, I cleaned the docking port with a customised Q-tip and some rubbing alcohol. It worked fine for a couple of hours. However, it now seems to work intermitently which is the most annoying thing.

Will be taking it to Apple tomorrow and demanding a new one. Anybody else have any ideas of how to stop it not working??
