Q: IOS 5.1.1. update bug (Volume Control)

This thread concerns IOS 5.1.1. update and the subsequent loss of volume button functionality and use of internal speakers.

Please can someone help from the mac team!

It's not a jailbreak phone. only purchased in early April on O2. Updated to 5.1.1. yesterday morning and now the volume buttons are virtually redundant!. Here are the symptoms;

  1. When the volume buttons are pressed on the home screen i get "ringer" and the speaker symbol appear but nothing more (ie. +/- volume)
  2. When playing back from iTunes with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  3. When i playback Youtube content with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  4. With headphones plugged in sound is audible and volume buttons work.
  5. Whilst using voicemail, (no headphones connected) i can play the message through the speakers and control volume using side buttons.

What's the deal Mac Support? I have restored the phone twice and also given the headphone jack a good blow with Servisol Duster 101.

Thanks, P

5 day old iPhone 4s brand new out the box. Came with IOS 4 speakers worked fine. Updated to latest IOS 5 as you do, and speakers do not work!!

Tried all the things people mentioned including the toothbrush and no luck!

iPhone has Definatley not had any water damage!!

The is clearly a software fault in the latest update!

Apple please investigate and resolve, otherwise this iPhone will be changed to a Samsung Galaxy!!

Do not jailbreak your phone. You may try the delete of the plist, but this will "disturb" your settings. Cannot really hurt.

Giving the bottom dock connector a good brushing out with a dry toothbrush solved the problem for me, too. I have an iPhone 4.

    I had the same problem.

Itried a few of the suggestions I found here.

Cleaning the port, changing the ring tone, connecting/syncing to the computer, etc.

    Then I went here:

    http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/assistant/phone/#section_1

"To restart iPhone, first turn iPhone off by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until a red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider and iPhone will turn off after a few moments.

Next, turn iPhone on by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears."

I restarted the phone and the problem was resolved.

We found that if you plug in your headset...play music...While music is playing TURN OFF YOUR PHONE.  Unplug your headset and turn your phone back on.   Worked for us for two different occasions!

I do not deserve this kind of crap. Not from Apple. Ive purchased. 2g 3g 3gs and 4g and ever since os5 my handsets have all gone downhill. And how can it take so long to fix this pumy issue. FIX THIS NOW! U have no right to treat customers like this. Not even a response. My wp phone has never even had a hickup and ive restarted it less than a handfull of times. But i update and no sound from speaker, no camera, not even data.

Agree! This is BS and about ready to get a new phone rather than pay 200 bucks for something I know is not the issue! I never had a single problem until this update!

    Durdy,

this is not Apple here, just users who discuss things here and try to give help to other users. Apple is not part of these forums, and even if someone from Apple reads a post, they will not answer or react. You have to contact Apple directly if you have complaints or claims to make.

I've had my iPad 2 since October 2011 and it's just now having this sound issue. I purchased the apple care protection plan, and I called apple care today to see if they knew about the issue. The guy just had me restart my ipad, and after a few minutes it seemed to right itself, but a couple hours later, bam, out again, and this has been what I've been dealing with the last few hours. So if this is likely an issue of the latest IOS update, is it even worth taking it into an apple store to look at? Can they even fix it?

This issue is affecting not only games and music but my videos as well, but basically any app that uses sound.

I can not watch any thing or listen to anything with out the sound dissapearing,  and also the phone wont let me listen to sound through its inbuild speakers.  So im left with using headfones only and have to remove them and put them back in to the fone when the sound cuts out.  I was watching the formula1 racing highlights, only 1hr30 mins long, and it must have cut out 30 times or more in that short time, in some minutes i would pull it out, it would work for another few seconds and then stop again.    I also attach my ifone to my car auxillery socket to listen to music and it cuts out very often there too.     Has apple given anyone a resolution to this.  the make shift solutions just arent good enuf for a £450 item that does not do as it should.   Booked call back with apple tomorrow.

Contacted Apple, " who have never heard of this issue," and they will be collecting my iphone for repair and return in 7 days.  I did plan to watch the olympics on it, but it will be over by time my fone is back.  Thanks Apple im a real happy customer(NOT)
