Q: IOS 5.1.1. update bug (Volume Control)

This thread concerns IOS 5.1.1. update and the subsequent loss of volume button functionality and use of internal speakers.

Please can someone help from the mac team!

It's not a jailbreak phone. only purchased in early April on O2. Updated to 5.1.1. yesterday morning and now the volume buttons are virtually redundant!. Here are the symptoms;

  1. When the volume buttons are pressed on the home screen i get "ringer" and the speaker symbol appear but nothing more (ie. +/- volume)
  2. When playing back from iTunes with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  3. When i playback Youtube content with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  4. With headphones plugged in sound is audible and volume buttons work.
  5. Whilst using voicemail, (no headphones connected) i can play the message through the speakers and control volume using side buttons.

What's the deal Mac Support? I have restored the phone twice and also given the headphone jack a good blow with Servisol Duster 101.

Thanks, P

After trying everything suggested anywhere online short of jailbreaking or completely restoring as new, I fixed my problem immediately by using the hair dryer on the speaker and headphone jack. Then about two minutes later, it happened again. It seems likely there's water somewhere, even though I've had it in a lifeproof case.

I have just experienced the problem of the volume switch not changing the ringer volume.

I found that plugging the charging cable into the bottom and wiggling it from side to side a few times sorted it out.  Its working fine now.

I had the EXACT same problem however I don't think it is a bug. People say to clean it out with a (dry) toothbrush to get rid of the dust in the charging slot because it thinks it's a dock. Do it thoroughly though. It worked immediately for me.

Duh?  Doesn't anyone watch Sesame Street?  Every time Apple has an impending rollout, the prior software updates mess up our current hardware.  It makes it slower or inoperable because "the hardware can't support the advanced program requirements".

I REALLY hate sounding like a conspiracy theorist.  But, it's consistency is undeniable.

Come on Apple people!! Even Steve Jobs would've considered this a cliche at this point!

Just had this issue. Restored to original, still having the problem.

TO FIX THIS CLEAN THE IPOD CABLE CONNECTION!!!!!

What I did was take a business card and cut it 1/2" wide and use that to clean/scrape out dirt/lint above and below the terminals in the ipod cable area. I did this along with just blowing the loosened lint out and the problem is instantly fixed!

Try it out. Takes 1 minute and solved my headache and trip to Apple store!!!!

I made a youTube video for those of you having the problem. Worth a shot! My iphone was jailbroken before and using iexplore to delete the sound file did not fix it nor did restoring it with the latest software back to factory settings.

This simple trick of cleaning out the cable connection fixed ALL issues immediately

Okay, after about a month and a half with this problem, it suddenly just started to work correctly again.

I followed three solutions, just not the jailbreaking solution. I cleaned the port several times on several occasions with a dry clean toothbrush, I used a 1/2-in thin piece of a business card and swiped it around the port a few times, and I used the USB plug and kept plugging it in and unplugging it.

None of them worked right away, but a few days later after the last attempt, my phone slowly became it's old self again.

??? Whatever, but it's back to normal, for now.

I still can't believe the Apple store couldn't help me or even heard of this problem. It seems to be prevalent.
