Q: IOS 5.1.1. update bug (Volume Control)

This thread concerns IOS 5.1.1. update and the subsequent loss of volume button functionality and use of internal speakers.

Please can someone help from the mac team!

It's not a jailbreak phone. only purchased in early April on O2. Updated to 5.1.1. yesterday morning and now the volume buttons are virtually redundant!. Here are the symptoms;

  1. When the volume buttons are pressed on the home screen i get "ringer" and the speaker symbol appear but nothing more (ie. +/- volume)
  2. When playing back from iTunes with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  3. When i playback Youtube content with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  4. With headphones plugged in sound is audible and volume buttons work.
  5. Whilst using voicemail, (no headphones connected) i can play the message through the speakers and control volume using side buttons.

What's the deal Mac Support? I have restored the phone twice and also given the headphone jack a good blow with Servisol Duster 101.

Thanks, P

    I couldn't agree more. Especially considering this isn't some cell phone manufacture tied to some OS that is provided by a generic external source. This is apple.  The reason for their success is that you buy apple because it works.

    Aboslutely the same issue occured after the 5.1.1 over the air update. Genius bar thought it was simply water damage to the phone and wanted me to replace one for $200 no matter how hard I tried to explain myself that it occurred RIGHT after the update.

    Just sent my feedback form. Hope they fix it soon. It's so annoying not to be able to play music, watch videos, or have sound in games.

    I hope things work out for you but I am still skeptical. I have had moments that my device seemed normal but it never lasts. With no response from apple and no software update offered I have a hard time accepting the software would de bug it's self

    Same problem here.  Tried all suggested solutions. No joy.  Sent feedback too.  Oddly, on an older 3GS, no problem.

    This Apple marketing line of "It just works" makes me smile.  I've spent just as much, if not more, time sorting out Apple device glitches as I have with Windows, Windows Mobile (as was) etc etc.  In fact, lately I'm spending much more time, esp with phones as each update brings a fresh problem.  First, battery drain.  Now this.  Must admit I will think seriously before upgrading again, at least to an Apple device!!!!!  Premium prices should attract premium quality!!!

    Just as a final attempt to solve this I connected the phone to one remaining iPod dock I had not tried.  Played music, pulled phone straight off dock and - SOUND!!!!!!  Let's hope the fix stays fixed!!!!!

    Next problem please.  Doubtless with 5.1.2!!!!

    Sorry to mention this but if you scan the discussion you will find many with momentary posts of victory. Followed promptly to a return to dismay. Moral of the story is I wish you the best but don't get your hopes up. I have had times after docking that my sound returned. Occasionally a text sound will come through or I will have my keyboard clicks. Then after a short while or once I charge my phone I am back to square 1. I tried to turn off wifi sync settings in the hope that if I docked the phone and the sound was back and I didn't sync the fix would last. No such luck.
