Q: IOS 5.1.1. update bug (Volume Control)

This thread concerns IOS 5.1.1. update and the subsequent loss of volume button functionality and use of internal speakers.

Please can someone help from the mac team!

It's not a jailbreak phone. only purchased in early April on O2. Updated to 5.1.1. yesterday morning and now the volume buttons are virtually redundant!. Here are the symptoms;

  1. When the volume buttons are pressed on the home screen i get "ringer" and the speaker symbol appear but nothing more (ie. +/- volume)
  2. When playing back from iTunes with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  3. When i playback Youtube content with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  4. With headphones plugged in sound is audible and volume buttons work.
  5. Whilst using voicemail, (no headphones connected) i can play the message through the speakers and control volume using side buttons.

What's the deal Mac Support? I have restored the phone twice and also given the headphone jack a good blow with Servisol Duster 101.

Thanks, P

I couldn't agree more. I am stuck with the fact that I am now 90% Mac with my products. I do wonder what the future of these products will be in regard to their reliability.  This was the strongest argument for buying Apple devices.

Two points. 1. My sound is still working 24hrs later after gently cleaning my docking port with a toothbrush. This is by far the longest success I have had since my update.

    2. I have not posted before that I am in Canada. So that will put to rest that this flaw is only for European devices. We are all suffering together with an absence of help or reply from Apple.

Yeah, happened to me too...just gonna add on to the thread so it may perhaps cross Apple's minds...hopfully they will release some sort of fix because this is quite annoying...tried all methods to try and solve it but no results at all.

One thing I thought of was the model number... My friend has an iPhone 4 like me and I updated both our phones at the same time.  My phones volume on max is now equal to hers at around 40% on the slider (her phone was not affected with this 'bug'). That means this update has reduced my phones max volume by 60%.

The difference? Her model number is MC603B, mine is MC605B.  Maybe everyone should check their model number and see if it's affecting certain ones.

    Andy.

Not sure how many days it's been but since cleaning the docking port with a soft toothbrush but I have had no volume issues since. I know others have posted no success after trying this fix. I hope I continue to be one of the lucky ones.

That said I wonder if we will se a fix before the 6.0 launch which is rumored to be soon

I have had the ipad 3 for a month now and I have the same volume problems. I have tried just about everything. In some cases sound does come back but its intermittent. At times I have waited for the Ipad to cool down. That seems to work but then while I am using spotify the sound goes out again. With the headphones on the sound works with no problems. Its the sound coming of the speakers where its having an issue. I hope apple fixes this soon. I am still under warranty so I will most likley take it to Genius bar.

Tried that one, but you need to have a jailbroken device. It works perfect. But all my accesories are not working anymore like the VGA output, Camera connection kit and Djay SPIN controller...

I'm a technician doing jailbreaking, rooting phones.

Done restoring. downloaded ios 5.1.1 twice on different computers without jailbreaking, found out that the sound will not work if there are no accesories connected...

Conclusion: There are conflicts betwwen the sound and accessories. Its a bug on ios 5.1.1.

Read the last NOTE: Deleting the 'com.apple.iapd.plist' may effect the functioning of hardware accessories that go with various apps, such as FM transmitters and  Nike accessories, etc.

I ended up taking my iPad to genius bar showed them when I toggled the volume that it clearly showed the headphone volume even though no headphones were plugged in. They gave me a new iPad on the spot. No questions asked. I only had the iPad for 2 months and I bought it online.

Plugging charge port into dock from ac power about 5 times until I finally heard the charge sound seemed to do the trick for me.
