How do you turn off data roaming?

How do you turn off data roaming. I'm headed overseas and will want to use wi-fi but not the phone services.

I know you maked Eric Ross's post as correct, & if that's all you do, don't complain if you come home to a huge nasty surprise. Perhaps Eric will pay your bill. You really should put the phone in Airplane Mode & not rely on that data roaming setting. Do a search of this forum for folks who relied on that data roaming setting only to face huge bills. Had a user just this week, read here:

Good luck.

wjosten, Now I am worried about when I take my iPhone 5 to an island in Canada next summer as I was planning on setting the Data Roaming to Off and the Cell Data to Off, but not using Airplane Mode as I will want to make and receive voice calls. It would not appear that I would be getting any huge charges or charges at all, except for specific Voice and/or Text. Right???

I mistakenly replied to the OP, I meant to reply to your post.

@wjosten,

thanks for your post. I'm about to leave for Europe. Now let me get this straight. I will put my iPhone4 on airplane mode, and switch the data roaming and voice roaming to off.

With your knowledge, If I do this can I safely use my translation and gps apps without fear of roaming charges?

Airplane mode turns off all iPhone radios, including GPS. So, in Airplane mode you won't be able to use GPS. As for your translation apps, unless all of the data is stored locally on your phone, they will require a data connection to work. While you can turn WiFi back on, while in Airplane, that obviously won't work when you're out and about. Your best bet is to get International Provisioning activated for your account, then pick a voice/data plan & use it sparingly. Still expensive, but cheaper than a surprise. Either that, or get your phone unlocked before your trip & use local sims.
