macbook air cracked screen

I am so frustrated. I have been an Apple customer for ages. Ths is my 5th Apple laptop. I was reluctant to purchase the MacBook Air because it looked too flimsey. I and only I use this computer. I shut it down and when I went back to it, I noticed a crack in the lower left hand side. I did absolutely NOTHING to it nor do I use pens/pencils or any other objects when I use it. Apple refused to cover this. I have only had it for a few months. I am very disappointed in this computer and Apple. I feel this computer is defected. Anyone else have this problem?

The crack happened to me last week. Called service...transferred me to extended warranty connections.....send then back to cust support. Someone spoke with their advisor which then translated to me on the phone as I needed to go into apple that is an hour away from me. They told me it was 400 to replace it. So angry as I was, I kept my cool and called the service center again. Waited to speak with a senior rep who was very helpful. He sent me a box to my home to send in my repair in hopes they would help me out that it was not my fault it cracked. I now today got a bill for nearly 800 to fix it. Oh I forgot I got apple care as well. The crack is worth more than the computer itself. I got in 8 months ago and now im going to be out 800 dollars. It was a graduation gift.....Please help with this problem.

Happy to say that my MacBook Air screen is being repaired under warranty. I took it into the store and they could see the crack originated from a point on the screen where it looked like something had poked it from behind the screen. The Apple rep in the store did a thoughtful evaluation and could see that there was no evidence of damage from the side where the damage would've come from or anywhere else. Hopefully they will figure out what is going on.

Like in June of 2012, I just finish with some spread sheets, click on the little apple icon to shut the MacBook Air(mid 2011). I woke up the next day and turn it on. I thought the screen had a little defect in the middle, so I restart the MacBook Air. When it rebooted, the crack just moved to the right side. I went to the apple store in fashion valley in San Diego, and told them this. I got back a ridiculous answer! "Theres no physical damage on the outside. The only way, I think your screen was cracked is you closed the lid too hard..?" I had warranty still but they told me it doesnt cover "screen or physical damage"? Funny...I still love Apple than PC's though...just wish the Genius Bar whatever actually give me a clear reasoning for my problem...

If it was damaged during the period of production, and was not noticed untill the unboxing then by law, you should get a new replacement macbook air as the product was a clear defualt, and should be replaced. I always do my purchases now at the apple store and unbox everything I purchase there on the spot.

I suggest in the future you do the same, as not every product is perfect and sometimes during the mass production of items and electronics can be damaged in the process.

I dont understand why they opted to put it through warrenty? or was everything sound after the 14 day period of purchase and the screen started to have defects after that period where you could no longer claim faults by replacement.

I have exactly the same problem. I had my Mac Book Air always in the solid case. When I opened it once in the office the screen was crushed just in the middle of the screen, just behind the Apple logo. I am seriously careful with all IT equipment and I am 100% sure I have not caused any damage or shock to the computer to result a screen crack.... And I am not a HULK to close the computer with such a power. I didn't pay almost 2000$ to receive a piece of crap!!! Especially that I was using the computer just few months. Besides it looks like if the whole case of the Mac Book Air was made in a solid material, instead of putting their advertisements (Apple logo) in the middle of the case then the computer would be more resistant to any environment conditions. I equipped my whole company in Apple products and I can not let them to ask me to pay for the reparation because I am sure I didn't do anything to crash the screen. There is absolutely no trace of shock outside or inside the screen. And 400€ to ask for the reparation.... for 400€ I can have a solid DELL, ASUS or HP... full equipped computer... It's just making fun of the customers. The waiting time to the Genius Bar in Paris... very often 2 weeks.... Which is just a proof of how many people are coming to complain about Apple products.... My appointment is in 2 days... after waiting 2 weeks.. Will let you know what they told me... if I was a HULK to destroy the computer or if I was crashing the Mac on the wall...

I did absolutely nothing to my new MacBook air

Barely Two months old, it cracked all of a sudden

While I was using it. The screen is all white and has a black

Spot and bleeding around the black spot.

I did not drop it or press on it hard. Why should the screen crack?

This is my first lap top with apple. I am not convinced

That it was due to user carelessness as I had other lap tos ( android)

And they all lasted two to three year before I decide to get a newer one.

It definitely seems we are on our own. Repairing the problem costs almost as much as some refurbished units. I am sure it was a mistake on Apple's part.

I assume my del laptops will typically work until they burst into flames after aout 3 or 4 years. Still, I've actually never had a laptop fail me in any way. This thing lasted me 10 months before a reletively modest rap on the screen cracked it.

The glass just need to be a bit thicker. That's the bottom line.

This has been the absolute WORST APPLE experience since I bought an APPLE for the first time in 2007. I bought the 2010 Macbook Air and have had nothing but issues with the screen. My last Macbook Pro was a beast... never had screen issues... and now, all of the sudden, I have screen issues every 3-4 months? I have already paid to have the screen replaced... $800 dollars. I actually thought for a minute it SOMEHOW MAYBE could've been my fault. Now I know that it's not. I opened up my Macbook AIR tonight only to find a big glowing purple and black crack internally in the screen. I'm ready to give Apple a run for their money. Meaning, I'm about to have them either replace this computer with a new version for the last time, or tell the story to the world through some of the biggest tech bloggers in the world. My computer is my business. I am an entrepreneur. I cannot afford to continue to have these issues any longer. There's a reason Apple's stock is going down for the first time significantly in years...it's for reasons like this... I'm really upset at this defective piece of sh+t Macbook Air. DO NOT BUY A MACBOOK AIR. They are defective. They will break randomly. I've had enough.

@Niccidanella. I understand that feeling. Mine has been replaced and cross my fingers it'll not be cracked again. It was costly to replace it. I dont think I was rough with it as I had 2 other lap tops that lasted more than 2 years without any hardware problems.

MY experience with the apple customer service in singapore made me very angry. Then I just decided that I have had my money stolen by a bully and just internalize it instead of get angry. I figured I can earn back the money instead of fight them.

I hope more people with bad experiences will come forth and talk about this.

I have the same situation and am so disappointed and frustrated. I was working on my macbook air (13") and one minute everything was fine then the next I noticed a crack (from inside the computer). I immediately called apple and they told me to make an appt. to bring my computer in the the Genius bar. The technician looked at it and classified it as "accidental" therefore not covered by the warranty (it's only 8 months old). I was in a state of shock when he said Apple wouldn't cover it. He said he didn't know what happened except that I something applied pressure to the screen from the outside (there's no mark or any physical evidence of any mark on the computer and I didn't drop it or apply any pressure). According to the technician he said that it could've happened days before the crack appeared . . . how ridiculous!!! I spoke to 3 Apple store represenatives who were completely robot in their answers and basically told me that they couldn't help me. The only solution was to pay $450 (when it should be under a warranty) to have the screen replaced. Imagine my surprise when I read all of your posts that indicate the same thing. It just happened and if the screen is too thin than that's a defect. No matter, I hope more people spread the word in order to have Apple take another look at their product. I'm very sad that Apple isn't standing behind their product. I am writing on the apple.com/feedback page, calling 1-800-MY-APPLE to file a complaint, and plan on writing the company board - they should know that customers are unhappy with an obvious defect and should look into the matter.

Dec 24, 2012 6:32 PM in response to jcsocalgal

At jcsocalgal, you are lucky your apple care covered it. I had apple care and the macbook was not even 2 months old when it happened, and they quote me 1177 SGD dollars to replace it. On top I had to deal with robotic apple employees, and one of them was even rude and hostile towards me when I tried to keep explaining the situation to her and she was not even empathetic.

I called apple to file a complaint and they had the same response that they will look into it, and then I received no calls from them to update me so I simply gave it up.

Dec 25, 2012 8:03 AM in response to Cyndi1111

At Cyndi1111, I guess I wasn't clear in my post but Apple DID NOT cover the cost to fix my cracked screen. I think the cost is outrageous to fix so it's still not repaired. It appears that all Apple employees are standing behind the company policy to not fix any cracked screens and claim them to be "accidental" so they don't have to cover any under warranty or fix the computer under their own cost. I hope more people call Apple to complain so it's on record that the computer has a defect. Once Apple figures out there is a problem then they will let their technicians know how to handle/fix. In the meantime, the Apple employees/technicians hands are tied to say the same thing . . . not their problem. Such horrible customer service!

You mentioned that you ended up just paying to get your screen fixed which is seems we are all having to do at this time, but hopefully everyone will still file a complaint so it goes on record that many people are having the same problem. This is the only way that anyone will eventually look into the situation.

Add my daughter's MacBook Air to the list.

I bought it for her at Xmas 2012. She was playing minecraft with it sitting on her lap 3 days ago when some funny vertical and horizontal lines suddenly appeared from the top right corner extending across the screen and down the screen. She thought it was something going wrong in the game so she restarted Minecraft, but the lines were still there. She called me over and I thought maybe it had got hot and that the graphics card was playing up so we turned it off and left it to cool for several hours. No joy, the lines are still there and a hardware reset didn't help.

Quick search on the internet reveals that we are not alone and appear to have involuntarily joined the spontaneous crack club. Really unimpressed that this can happen all by itself in a computer that is less than 2 months old.

Taking it to Apple on Friday and I will be very, very, very angry if they come back with an accidental damage excuse. Sitting a loptop on your lap and using it can NOT be misconstrued as mishandling. This is what laptops are specifically designed for. Surely the MacBook Air can't be that flimsy that the screens break by staring at them too long !

Mar 6, 2013 9:21 PM in response to CT

No pens, no pencils, no anything. I was sat 3 feet away in the same room at the time it happened and it wasn't dropped or closed on anything. She was actually playing minecraft on it at the time.

My suspicion is that the LCD is extremely fragile and the slight twisting of the frame that happens when the lid is opened and adjusted, puts stress across the LCD which over time is cummulative enough to eventually crack it. I suspect this subtle frame twisting is also behind why the trackpad doesn't depress or click.

Take home message would be don't ever open an Air or adjust the angle of its screen using any part of the top frame other than the very centre of the top edge. Adjusting its angle by using the top left or top right edge will twist the LCD and one day it will crack.
