Handbrake works wonderfully
mpegstreamclip will also work but is a bit more difficult to use (according to some)
If you have a PC, Format Factory is also a good file converter, but handbraake is the easiest
and all are free

Once you get it to MP4, import it into iTUnes then sync. Works very easily, and Handbrake even has presets for iDevices. One feature I like, it has a queue, meaning you can tell it 'rip all 8 movies that are on this disc' and walk away and let it work (you do have to queue each one individually but other htan that it works good)

Ok, so now I have video performer/handbrake open, but I can't choose the dvd-r from my dvd drive (e:) to convert it to MP4. Now what? Do I need to do something to the DVD to get it into Video Performer?

You should click on source, navigate to the DVD. the program will scan it then come up with a list of titles on it
When you burned the disc, did you finalize it? Does it play on a set top player?
yes, it does play on a set top.... the link vaz sent says that I need OSSbuilder, but it will not download. Saved to my computer, but will not run. When i add the dile name the converter does not recognize..
Guess I will pull my hair out on the way to trying to get a home movie on the gift ipad for my wife...LOL
Sorry that I cannot be of more help since I haven't used handbrake on a PC and not sure as to why that file will not run. Perhaps Sky can shed some light
There are other programs as suggested above although this one tends to be the easiest to use

Or give mpegstreamclip a try.
I don't find it difficult to try but some have said that it is. YMMV.
I know how to use it and do all the time, it's just hard to do it 'blind'.
I think it's working, converting now. I went back through it all and also did the dll file fix thing, that was the ticket... Wow, tough figuring the issue, but I may be on my way....Many thanks!!!
