2 queries: Indian Rupee font and direct typing of Indic fonts

I got a MacBook Pro 2 months ago.

How do i do these:

  1. Use and install the Indian Rupee font?
  2. Type indic fonts (sanskrit, tamil, kannada) directly (a la Baraha which, alas, is made only for the PC) into documents on my macbook pro? The Devanagari keyboard etc. that I installed produce gibberish when i try to type using them!

I need both for my work and I am handicapped without the ability to do these.

Help!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

There is no need to install anything to type Indic scripts. You go to system preferences/language & text/input sources and check the boxes for Devanagari, Tamil, Kannada, plus the box for Show Input Menu in Menu Bar, plus the box for Keyboard Viewer. Then you go to the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen and select Devanagari and type. You select Keyboard Viewer from the same menu to see which key does what. OS X already has the correct fonts installed and the script should appear in your text.

MS Word for Mac does not support Indic scripts, so use something else. Also Windows Indic fonts are most likely not going to work.

Is your reference to the "Indian Rupee font" just because you need to type the new Rupee symbol?

Here are some options for inputting ₹:

a) use the Character Viewer

b) set up a shortcut in system preferences/language & text/text/symbol and text substitution

c) activate the Unicode Hex keyboard layout and hold the Option/alt key while typing 20B9

d) make a custom keyboard layout where you add 20B9 to a convenient key using

On OSX 10.9 Mavericks and Numbers 3.1 its simply `(Alt +` - ie Alt + the key to the left of 1). Then select that character and change the font to Rupee Foradian. Of course, the font Rupee Foradian must be installed. It can be found at: http://www.civilspedia.com/2010/10/get-rupee-symbol-from-your-keyboard-by.html#. UvJNnXl22PE or any other site.

I would recommend against using this option, because you are not really creating the Rupee symbol in digital terms and no one else will see it unless they also have the same font installed. Instead use the Devanagari keyboad layout option.
