HP Laserjet 2550L prints one job then hangs

I've noted that HP Laserjet 2550 will only take one job and then then the iMac will claim it is waiting for the printer to become available (forever). Unplugging/replugging the USB will not clear this though the driver does note that it is unplugged/replugged.

It seems like the printer doesn't know that the last job was done and thus holds off all other jobs.

The only way to take another job is to power-cycle the printer.

Anyone knows how to solve this problem? Thanks.

I have the same problem with OS 10.7.4 Lion it sees the printer, I have the driver version 18.4 via Apple update, but nothing, printer just tells me

Waiting for Printer. After a while it just goes offline

Printer works fine under Windows 7. So it is an Apple issue that the printer can't even print. If I

Use PCL driver it prints but only in BW, so

I'm positive the driver HP LASERJET 2550 Series from Apple doesn't work under OS 10.7.4 Lion

People who need to SCAN & PRINT without a compatible Lion driver from their manufacturer can use Apple's very basic "PRINT & SCAN" utility in System Preferences:

  1. Click the Apple menu (User uploaded file ), and then click System Preferences .
  2. Click Print & Scan (User uploaded file ).
  3. Click Scan , and then click Open Scanner .
  4. Click Show Details . The details of the scan display, including options to modify scan settings such as output type.Figure 2: Example of the Show Details scanning screenUser uploaded file
  5. Change any settings as necessary, and then click Scan .

The next window looks like this:

Hope this helps 🙂

I had this issue too with my HP 2550. No more printing after the first printjob possible 😟

I managed to get the printer working as expected by removing the hp_io_enabler kext.

sudo -s

mkdir /Valhalla

mv /System/Library/Extensions/hp_io_printerclassdriver_enabler.kext /Valhalla

exit

Wait for the systemcaches to be rebuilt and reboot. You can see if the caches are being rebuilt by opening the Activity Tool, the process is named kextcache.

You need to have the Valhalla Folder in root of course.

Not very mac-like, but it works 😉

I was recently 'inherited' a 2550Ln. The latest round of Apple-supplied HP drivers allowed it to be instantly recognized and integrated onto my list of available printers as soon as I plugged it in via USB. Wonderful color printing and all. Then I discovered the "one print per session" bug. After I changed the (longish) USB cable for one of higher quality, now I occasionally get 2-3 printouts before it hangs, and I get a reset by simply unplugging the USB, waiting awhile, and plugging it back in, without having to power-cycle the printer. Will now try Dominique's suggestion and see how it fares.

BTW, how do you folks configure the thing? I got it with no manuals, no disks, nothing but the printer and its cables. Cartridges & drum are about 60% full, so I'll use it till empty then go wrangle with the boss to get authorized a refill. Got the whole manual set from HP's portal. However, I need to reconfigure a couple of things, including the JetDirect card so I can use it without the USB cable. You're supposed to use the "HP Toolbox" for that, but I can't find the Mac version on HP's pages. Heck, not even a Win7 or WinXP version (got Fusion and the VMs have already seen and connected to the 2550). How have you set yours up?

Outstanding! Even though I was blessed with the opportunity to try out the new cat before it leaped out of the bag, since I was doing that at home, never thought of doing a test run at work and discovering this improvement.

BTW, I solved the issue with a workaround. We finally found the install CD so I could fire up the HP Toolbox on a WinXP instance on Fusion, enable and reconfigure the Jetdirect card, then plug it in the LAN and use it as a network printer. It does not hang thru that interface, in comparison to straight USB connection.

Now I'm hunting around for a competitively priced consumables supplier; them darn color cartridges ain't exacty a dime a dozen, are they? Especially the yellow one or the imaging drum... User uploaded file

i have the same problem using snow lepoard on Mac Pro..

The only way to take another job is to power-cycle the printer-- for all applocations : acrobat , inDesign, word, even apple's mail application, etc...

btw... this same thing happens even when i put my HP Laserjet 2550n on my Cat 5 network?

any ideas?
