.
You can not guide you through email?
If your iPhone is locked to AT&T they are the only ones that can unlock it. Contact them. They have stated that they will now unlock iPhones that have completed their contract or that have paid an early termination fee.
Apple can not unlock your phone. No one here can help you unlock it. Only the carrier it is locked to can help you.
Best of luck.
Which part are you not understanding?
-ONLY AT&T can unlock it and they won't.
-We are individuals, not part of Apple. We can NOT unlock your phone
-Apple can't either
-NO ONE can unlock your phone.

According to AT&T's press release, conditions for unlock include:
"...that a customer's account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies, or paid an early-termination fee."
So if you are not, or were not, an AT&T customer, you are not going to get your AT&T phone unlocked.
Miriam, I don't understand your statement. Are you saying that the many people who report successfully getting AT&T to unlock their iPhones are lying or deluded?
Show me first hand reports of people who have had their phones unlocked by AT&T. If you read MacInTouch, there are numerous reports of people who tried and failed!
They unlocked my old 3Gs earlier this very month. I am still an AT&T customer, with my iPhone 4 which was an upgrade from the 3Gs. When I called, I just gave them the info from the 3Gs, about a week later I got an email saying to plug into iTunes and the unlock went through.
Process was exactly as described in several news reports, and it went through with no hassles nor fuss.
I have one family member who has also unlocked one of their older phones (an iPhone4 as they have a 4s now).
I can also confirm what Michael Black has said. I unlocked both my old 3GS and iPhone 4 without difficulty. I am currently an AT&T customer in good standing.
Mea maxima culpa!
