I want to clean up the desktop by getting rid of useless apps like game center and news stand.
1. How an I delete them.
2. If delete is not possible, can they be hidden from view.

You can't delete them. You can't hide them. If you need to make room on the home screen, group apps into folders. Newsstand cannot be put in a folder because it, itself, is a folder.

1. You cannot delete them. They are part of iOS.
2. You can put them in either a folder or on a new screen. This hides them from view.
Since they are part of iOS and not simply free standing apps, they cannot be deleted. Newstand is actually a folder and cannot be placed in another folder, so,while you can move the other unwanted/unused apps to a folder to get them out of the way, you can't it. Best option I can recommend to to move the superfluous apps onto an additional page.
We discussed this when Newsstand first came out. Yes, you are correct, Newsstand is a specialized iOS folder and it is difficult to put into another folder, but it can be done. You have to be really quick and also have a bit of luck, but many of us have done it. 😎
The caveat is that some folks have found that having done so can somehow damage Newsstand and it doesn't work if you change your mind and want to take it out of the other folder and use it.

Not sure but I thought that trick was disabled in 5.1?
You may be right, I haven't tried it again. I use Newsstand for my Nat Geo, Pop Sci and Pop Mech subscriptions.
Some have reported the folderizing of newsstand being disabled with 5.1, but I'm running 5.1.1 and I have mine folderized on both my Touch and iPad....so it's a some thing, not all.
But did you already have it in the folder before applying the iOS 5 upgrade? It may have remained that way, but we need someone who hasn't previously put it in a folder to try it with iOS 5.
Understood, but did you 'folderize' it before you updated to 5.1?
Move them to the last screen of Apps and keep them isolated or just ignore them.

"Who was the mastermind that thought of integerating a social gaming app into the operating system?"
Is social gaming so integral to the use and function of the iPad that it needs to be embedded into the OS???
Granted that I am just hours into my first ever Apple device, when I tried to drag GC off the page, presumably to the next page, it snapped back to the home page.
Is there another way to relegate it to another page?

But, you can't take it out of the folder without damaging the app. Just had to put this out there.
You CAN put newsstand into a folder. I disagree that you solved this question.
Yes, you can drag the Newsstand to other App pages. I have mine on the third page. When you drag the icon hold it at the edge of the screen until the screen switches to the following page.
How can I get rid of game center or at least remove the icon?
