Kernel Panics in 10.7.4

I too have been experiencing multiple Kernel panics on my mac mini. Started recently once I upgraded to 10.7.4. Very nasty bug I since it rendered all my USB connected drives inoperable and damaged my Time Machine backup too. MacMini runs slowly and experiences crashes from several programs without warning. It's almost as though any drive that 'touches' the machine gets its partition corrupted without warning or known solution.

I figured out how 'repair' the USB drives using my Macbook which fortunately is still running 10.7.3. It reports the drives need formatting however, the repair function successfully repairs the partition. I was quite nervous since my backup was also reported as damaged when I connected to my 10.7.3 (MBP) machine. So far have not lost any data but definitely some sleep.

I am planning to 'downgrade' to 10.7.3 on the Mini so will update on my success.

I have never experienced this type of behavior in any Mac based machine. I hope this gets resolved very quickly. I need to regain confidence in Lion.

Kenal Panic upon waking from sleep. Most offen when the lid is closed and reopend. Keyboard stays lit screen goes dark. Macbook Pro 6.2 15" Mid 2010. Have looked everywhere no real solution. One of the problems may be USB controler based. Reinstaled Wacom software Or the NVIDIA GForce, intalled the patch. I have no answer and neither does Apple. It all started about 3 weeks ago. Did a clean Lion restore fixed disk everything. Waiting for someone to crack this nut.

I'm also in the boat of "random" 10.7.4 crashes. I'm up to 4 to 5 times a day, and I think that there's a subtle pattern to it. I can count on a Kernel panic if I'm watching a video that's running on Silverlight, and also external USB drives were a big problem. USB headphones - same thing - ending a Skype call kills the computerP

Passes all hardware tests, seems to be related to talking to things outside the CPU intensively - USB bus, Graphics Card...I have no solutions, but it definitely seems that if there's any subsystem that's in use and it's switching - e.g. the video player scrolls off the screen, or the voice call ends - it's almost like the CPU is losing track of what's going on in the various subsystems and freaks out. I have no idea if that's the case, but it sounds good to me. Anyway, I can't roll back - this computer arrived new with 10.7.4 on it.

Oh well. I use the reboot time to walk around and get some air.

I, too, have had very frequent kernel panics since upgrading to 10.7.4. I have an early 2009 iMac 20" (2.66 GHz) with 8G of RAM. I purchased the machine refurbished, and it came with the original 350G HD. I needed more space so I replaced the original drive with a 1.5T Seagate HD.

I tried everything (eliminating non-Apple extensions, reinstalling 7.4 from combo updater, repairing drive, etc.) — nothing eliminated the KPs.

I strongly suspect that it has to do with third-party drives installed as the boot drive. 10.7.4 apparently does not play nice with any internal drives that are not original to the machine, or perhaps it is specific manufacturers (Seagate) that it doesn't like.

My wife uses the iMac extensively for tele-commuting, so it's essential that there be no down time during her work periods.

Anyway I have (painfully) gone back to 10.7.3 (with which I have had no issues) till Apple fixes the problem.

Ugh! Genius thinks that it's graphics card because it panics on boot as the nvidea drivers are loading. Sent it back to replace logic board which has the graphics card on it. It is returned from the repair depot and same problem, but worse, now I am told the power lights won't even turn on, not to mention the screen. It is going back again to have hardware tested again (fortunately apple is waving the $310 fee for having it go back twice). I personally believe this was all caused from the 10.7.4 update, because prior, I had no problems.

I've had around 35 kernel panics since the upade 10.7.4 I've reinstalled lion throug recovery mode. Though everything went well when I had another one just now.

I don't know what's wrong with this update. I don't know what to do as my apple hardware test is good, my harddrive test is good, permissions are good as well.

So I don't know where to look at anymore. Knowing that I never had ANY problems until 10.7.4

Any advice would be welcome. Did someone had apple on the line ? will there be a fix ? or should I just throw it away !!!

I've just about given up with this to be honest. Each time I upgrade my iMac to 10.7.4 I get lots of Kernel Panics too. I've decided to stick to 10.7.3 for the forseeable.

I'm really not sure what the problem is and Apple have looked at it too.

Hopefully all will be rectified in the near future. What I do know is that Lion (client and server) have been hideous Operating Systems for me. So much so that my Mac Mini Server has now gone on ebay. I've moved email and user accounts to Office365. My Time Capsule is also on ebay..... It's totally unstable since the last round of updates. My Mac Pro has also not been the same since Lion was installed on it and that is about to go too. I've also made the jump from the iPhone 4S to the Samsung Galaxy S3.....what a world of difference it is and a breath of fresh air.

I finally got my Mac Pro fixed. I don't know about everyone else's individual symptons, but mine would freeze while operating 10.7.4 and then I got stuck in a cycle of freezing while booting on the Gray screen with the apple and spinning dash cycle icon. I eventually could not boot to normal, safe or recovery modes. I booted in verbose several times to see where it was hanging up and even though many different errors were coming up, it could not get past the graphics card drivers. I took to genius and they couldn't boot it up off their "known good" external harddrive. They finally diagnosed it with a faulty graphics card and sent it in for replacement (the graphics card is on the logic board, so the whole logic board needed replaced). It was to cost $310 for the incident. Three days later I get a call from Genius and he explained that they received my early 2008 Macbook Pro back. He explained that when he went to test it, it would not even power on and that the repair depot messed up and it would have to send it back again. He also waved all charges for the repair. Two days later I get a call and my computer is fixed, Apple even replaced my 4 year battery that was showing the "service required" warning. I have no idea how the graphics card went bad, but it happened at the same time as the update and is now fixed and workng beautifully on 10.7.4.

Take your machine to genius and have them boot from their "known good" harddrive. If its hardware, dispite the replacement costs, maybe less of a headache than a software problem.

I have a Mac Mini that was upgraded to 10.7.4 and a Mac Book pro that remained at 10.7.3 (I avoided O/S upgrades since experiencing the problems with the Mini).

After numerous issues on the Mini loaded with 10.7.4 (Grey screen, crashes etc..) it has become more stable however I needed to repair all my USB connected disks using my 10.7.3 Macbook Pro and am experiencing periodic crashes that I cannot explain on the 10.7.4 Mini. There are ample numbers of crash reports to try and troubleshoot this.

I have concluded there were either issues with 10.7.4 or the process of upgrading from 10.7.3 to 10.7.4 caused some isues to precipitate. I am not going to try and troubleshoot but rather wait for Apple to provide update. I suspect I will need to wait for Mountain Lion to repair the 10.7.4 issues which I not be thrilled about paying the extra dollars for. I think there are some stability issues they need to address and provide a patch for.

I truly hope they issue a fix and that the accounting folks are not now in charge of Apple as I really liked the reliability of the Mac O/S and hope they will just issue a fix asap.

I have a really interesting test-bed here. I bought a Macbook Air AND an iMac at the same time - the Air has 10.7.3 and I have not updated it, and the iMac has 10.7.4 - I ran the update when I was setting it up for the first time. The Air has never Kernel panicked, the iMac now KP's about 4 times a day, with no particular pattern. Some things I have noticed:

- USB drives connected to the iMac (10.7.4) become corrupted and need to be reformatted

- Playing back any video increases the chances of a KP - especially after 10-12 minutes of playback.

- Certain events associated with A/V output seem to trigger the KP - for example, ending a Skype call, where Skype had muted iTunes, resulted in a KP. Moving a window that's playing a video resulted in a KP.

- The KP's are NOT reproducable by me. Since my computer is set to re-open everything and recover state, I've tried doing exactly what I was doing (e.g. end a Skype incoming call after it muted iTunes) and the KP does not happen again.

KP logs are showing no particualr pattern I can see - no KEXT that's consistently in the report, no event that triggers. I'm way out of my depth here, but the computer has passed every test it can take, I dread the process of rebuilding a system, I really don't have the time nor desire to deal with it.

It appears that many of us are in the same boat.

I don't see the logic in attempting to fix what Apple clearly screwed up and my colleagues and I have reverted to 10.7.3 after 2 weeks of kernel panics, frustration and wasted time caused by the 10.7.4 update.

When Apple eventually gets off its butt and acknowledges that it has created a dog's breakfast with this update and more importantly, does something about fixing it, we will take another more cautious look at updating our software - something we have rarely had to do in the past.

Slightly harsh but I take your rhetoric and liken Lion as the dog's breakfast. I've slowly but surely come to the conclusion that it is a god awful OS! I will refrain from Mountain Lion for a while.... Come back Snow Leopard!

I can hereby confirm that it is the 10.7.4 update that messes things up in my computer. I have an iMac (late 2011) and everything works fine until I upgrade from 10.7.3 to 10.7.4.... And then it begins. Multiple kernel panics. Over and over again.

The exact same thing happened to me. I then decided to re-install Lion from the recovery drive. It worked out fine, and when the OS later prompted that I should update to 10.7.4 I didn't. Worked fine for two whole days. Then just for the sake of it, I tried updating to 10.7.4 again… And right after the re-boot, the kernel panics started occuring again. Over and over again. I have an iMac!
