Kernel Panics in 10.7.4

I kid you not, ever since I updated 10.7.4 last night, I've had at least 3 kernel panics, plus it wouldn't wake up from sleep.

Sometimes it seems to crash for no reason at all -- the computer will just be sitting there and I won't be doing anything; granted, I'm sure a skillion processes are running, but no more than I would usually run.

I have no idea what's going on.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Where are the pertinent logs hiding so I can share them with some wise soul?

Thanks, everyone.

Correct! You beat me to it.

Apple has a bug in 10.7.4 that practically disables older MacBooks and some other models. It causes serious kernel panic problems. I have tried three times to update to 10.7.4 and the kernel panics have returned with each update.

Until Apple acknowledges the problem and releases a fix - which is taking forever - stay with 10.7.3.

Ignore any recommendation that tells you to update to 10.7.4. These folks are not experiencing the 10.7.4 issues that have negatively impacted so many of us.

OK, I've narrowed it down - a bit.

First of all, even though I'm not on a Mac Air, I've connected the dots and thus far these Kernel panics happen when:

- Google Chrome is Running

- I'm doing a lot of I/O into/from Google Chrome (e.g. scrolling rapidly, typing into a Google Doc - anything that's heavy on the rendering side).

The Mac I'm using has the AMD Radeon HD 6770M graphics with 512MB RAM.

Will report after my day of no chrome to see if it's better. Normally I have 4-6 KP's a day.

Wish I had read this thread before trying to figure it out myself what was going on for the last two weeks.

I have a 21.5 in late 2009 iMac. It is definitely the update as 10.7.3 is stable.

Funny thing is I tried to do a fresh install of 10.7.4 and it kept panic-ing at 14% installation...after I had erased the drive.

Hopefully I won't have to update to 10.7.4 again just to get to the next version.

Replying to myself here, simply to kick the thread and keep it alive.

My previous thought that it was Google Chrome was eradicated with a day of chrome-free work.

For a while I thought it was vertical scrolling via the mighty mouse. I noticed a series of KP's as I scrolled a large web page.

KP's on streaming video are common enough that I'll declare that to be a definite trigger (but not a CONSISTENT trigger).

In short, it seems to this armchair detective that any time there's a need for a fast refresh of the screen, whether that is via scrolling rapidly or certain video (maybe stuff that's got a lot of CPU use? GPU? Dunno..) that's putting the system at risk.

At this point, I'm having routine KP's, I can't roll back to anything, this machine shipped with 10.7.4.

Jul 11, 2012 12:43 PM in response to MartyF

I was having the same kp's and start up issues. I had no problems when running 10.7.3 and even updating to 10.7.4 (had issues) rolling back to 10.7.3 fixed it. I upgraded back to 10.7.4 and problems persisted. Until one day, my MBP would not start. It turned out the graphics card had something wrong (hence all the kp's happening while performing graphics related tasks). Apple replaced the logic board which has the graphics card and everything is back to normal. So, I conclude the problem is actually a faulty graphics card that is really exposed by 10.7.4. Have your computer hardware tested for a faulty graphic card, it may take a few different tests, i found major errors while booting in verbose)

Well maybe it won't be a problem for Mountain Lion because they won't be supporting some early macs.

Or maybe I'm safe:

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/02/which-macs-will-os-x-mountain-lion-support/

"So which Macs get to stay on the island? According to TUAW's source, Mountain Lion will run on:

  • iMac (mid 2007 or later)
  • MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, 2.4/2.2 GHz), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
  • Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)"

As previously noted, I dealth with the KP issue for several weeks. Apple replaced my mid-2009 MacBook Pro, in which I had installed a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB hard drive, with a late 2011 MacBook Pro after they were unable to resolve the problem with KPs after install (and re-install) of 10.7.4. Apple techs suspected a conflict with the Seagate drive, but it was never confirmed to me. They took my problematic MacBook in hopes of pulling it apart to figure out what was causing the KP. I hope Apple resolves this issue for everyone. In the meantime, I suggest calling AppleCare and insisting on a free 30 day extension to AppleCare since this is a problem that they initiated with the roll out of 10.7.4 (they did this for me). After the first tech was unable to resolve my issue, the matter was internally escalated to a Senior Tech, who was nice enough to offer me a new (and fully functional) laptop. The professionalism and friendliness from Apple was over the top. Apple probably won't replace computers for everyone, but hopefully they can isolate your hardware/software conflict and offer you a satisfactory repair/replacement option. Good luck, all.

Hi guys,

Thought I'd join this thread as I'm running 10.7.4 on an '07 MBP and am having similar issues. At first I thought the kernel panics were occurring because of a game I was playing, but of late they've been occurring even when I'm using other programs such as Safari, MS Word, etc. If I can point to when it occurs it seems to be when the computer is really working, e.g. running a game with good graphics, running multiple applications or having several webpages open at once, etc. The only other thing is that I'm using a wired USB mouse, but, again, I've used that before without problems. My computer's details are: 2.2 GHz MBP, 2 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8600M graphics, running 10.7.4. Here's the log from the latest panic:
