Kernel Panics in 10.7.4

I kid you not, ever since I updated 10.7.4 last night, I've had at least 3 kernel panics, plus it wouldn't wake up from sleep.

Sometimes it seems to crash for no reason at all -- the computer will just be sitting there and I won't be doing anything; granted, I'm sure a skillion processes are running, but no more than I would usually run.

I have no idea what's going on.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Where are the pertinent logs hiding so I can share them with some wise soul?

Thanks, everyone.

I had Panics with 10.7.4 so reverted back to 10.7.3. No panics at all with 10.7.3. Upgraded to 10.8 and my iMac constantly panics and reboots.

It could be a hardware problem but then I'd expect 10.7.3 to panic too which it doesn't. I've sent the reports to Apple via the onscreen reporting tool but I'm not holding out for a cure. I don't remember experiencing this much woe in the world of Windows. I'm seriously considering returning back to world of Microsoft.

If the software Apple sold you is not working with the hardware Apple sold you, demand an immediate fix or replacement.

This happened to me last year. My 2010 MacBook Pro kept going black screen. I worked with AppleCare and did all the diagnostics and troubleshooting they asked. I took it to an Apple Retail Store, etc. They finally told me they were "aware of an issue" and that engineers were working on it and I should just wait for a patch "sometime very soon."

Sorry, no. The black screen crashing problem was not just an inconvenience, it was a work-stoppage issue for me. I could no longer do my job. Apple software was not working on Apple hardware, so that is their responsibility to correct, not my problem to wait out. They replaced my MBP and the problem was resolved.

I have metioned several times that it is probably caused by a faulty graphics card. Boot up in verbose and you will see comon errors that all point to the graphics card. My computer is a 2008 MBP and has been out of warranty and applecare for years now, but apple replaced my logic board, which the graphics card is part of, and that fixed everything. It was hard to diagnose and took weeks of frustration trying to figure it out, but it is the likely problem.

Once again, it is highly unlikely it is a software issue, especially if you have installed a clean recovery and still have problems.

I updated to 10.8 last night from 10.7.3 and have been updating programs, opening programs to make sure they work, and so far no kernel panics on my mid-2010 Mac Mini. Same with my 13 inch mid 2009 MacBook Pro 13" which I had successfully updated to 10.7.4. My previous post lists what all I did to update the mini to 10.7.4 without success.

I might ad that so far the finder seems slow in opening programs, copying files and so forth. Have had the spinning beach ball a couple of times for maybe 5-10 seconds. Search has completed indexing, so that is not the problem. I also noted that when I would click on the applications alias on the doc and it would open, there was no scroll bar to navigate, even if I hovered over the area it was supposed to be. I went into systems preferences/general and changed the button from "Show scroll bars: Automatically based on mouse or trackpad" to "Always" and everything is fine now. Using a logitech wireless mouse by the way.

So no kernel panics and was able to update the mini.

It's been a frustrating week. I flattened my iMac after many problems upgrading to Lion at 10.7.4. Taken me ages to reinstall starting from Snow Leopard so I could check there wasn't a hardware problem. Reinstalled and updated (over copper pair) Sibelius, Logic and Pro Tools 10.2

I was thrilled when about an hour ago, I finally got the iMac up in Lion 10.7.4 and listened to some compositions in Sibelius which didn't stutter and overload the CPU as before.

Then I went to save a .sib file and to my horror I got a Spinning Beach Ball. I could not Force Quit any application. The  menu was only partly rendered. So I did a hard reboot and PRAM reset (3 times). The iMac is presently in Safe Boot mode.

I also run a MacBook Pro (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB SDRAM) and the install of 10.7.4 is as solid as a rock. No problems like those on the iMac. I'm running loads of extensions, Dropbox, avasta, Sophos and the MBP has not had a single problem for a week.

As I'm writing now, I'm using Google Chrome which is at Version 20.0.1132.57 - I'm waiting for the iMac (in Safe Boot) to complete a Software Update. I do hope it fixes all these spinning beach balls.

I really don't want to have to download all those updates again so:

  1. I have a copy of the Lion Install file
  2. a Recovery Assistant on a USB stick
  3. a Carbon Clone of the final Snow Leopard install I made before updating to Lion.

Okay, my kps looks like it was due to a RAM problem per geniuses.

I purchased the required spec RAM from Amazon/Crucial and it worked fine with 10.7.3 but had problems with 10.7.4 and 10.8.

Since removing and reinstalling the original 4gb of stock ram, i haven't had a kernel panic (in 10.8)...yet. Will try some memory intensive programs like handbrake.

Going to see if Crucial will replace the 4x4gb i purchased. Hopefully, yes.

Hi All,

Here is the official Apple response on the issue of late 2010 MBP's running 16 GB SDRAM and having KP with 10.7.4 or 10.8.

The official Apple response, after dealing with their upper level technical support folks (who have been very very nice) since I started this thread on May 12th, is that 16 GB SDRAM is not supported on those MBP under 10.7.4 or 10.8.

Apple will not fix the issue with the OS memory mapping thats causing the KB on boot and the most SDRAM supported by those MBP is 8 GB.

If you are one of those folks with a MBP with 16 GB of aftermarket SDRAM that KP with 10.7.4 or 10.8 now is the time to call up Apple and make your voice heard on this issue or you will be going back to 8 GB SDRAM if you want to run the current OS.

Call 800-275-2273 and ask for Customer Relations and explain to them nicely what the problem is and how it impacts you and why they should fix it.

Again be nice, as "officially" those MBP were never speced for 16 GB SDRAM and are not supported.

I've been waiting 10.8 to upgrade since 10.7.4 gave me kernel panics.

Today I did bought the upgrade and it didn't event complete the new OS install. It gave me Kernel Panic before finishing 10.8 installation.

That's very frustrating. I'm stuck in 10.7.3 for my Macbook 2009 should actually be compatible with Mountain Lion as Apple advertises.

I hope Apple has a fix for it soon. I'll go back and restore to 10.7.3.
