I am not sure why the writer is shocked. This kind of thing happens all the time. Even having read the posts I am unable to increase the type size. Inscrutable problems created by Apple all the time. People just give up and suffer.

This is actually quite easy and I am shocked that this answer has been so hard to find for so many people. This is how you make system font size larger.

  • under the apple on the top left of computer click on preferences--make sure you are in finder mode first. That means that the word directly next to the apple says FINDER.
  • A box will open with all your preferences. The last row on the far right will say ACCESSIBILITY. Click that Icon.
  • The first in a row of display preferences will be called DISPLAY. Now for older people like myself or even those with bad eyesight, this is the place you can make that teeny tiny cursor BIGGER!!! YEAH!
  • Ok, at the bottom of that box will be a clickable button that says, Open display preferences. Click that.
  • For some reason the Mac book air is shipped with the display preference set to "Scaled" and this is what is causing so many problems. Go ahead and set it to BEST FOR DISPLAY. VIOLA YOU CAN NOW SEE ALL THE WORDS ON YOUR SCREEN!!!!

If you need to increase the fonts in certain programs you can find this function in the Preferences of each program--found under the name of the program opened--directly to the right of the apple, and also they can be found under view for each program.

I hope this helps those of us who are visually challenged :-)
