How much will it cost to replace the rear screen of an iPhone 4S?

I've had my iPhone 4S for about 2 months, and today the phone has accidently slipped off the bed and left the glass on the back of the phone quite badly shattered. The actual phone is still functioning as normal though! I called up the Apple store in Liverpool, UK and got told that they couldn't quote me a price over the phone, and so I phoned the Apple support who informed me that it would cost almost £145 if I got it replaced through them.

Could anyone give me the price I would expect to pay if I go to the Apple store to get it replaced? I live about 60 miles from my nearest Apple store so I would quite like to find out the price before travelling if possible! Thanks in advance!

Apple does not repair iPhones, but will replace the entire iPhone for a flat fee. The price you were given by Apple Support is the same price you'd pay in an Apple Store other than shipping charges:

There are independent iPhone repair services that may be able to replace the back for less. Do a web search for "iPhone repair". Note, though, that if you elect to have the iPhone serviced by an unauthorized shop, all further warranty will be void.

Thank you for your reply. The woman I spoke to at Apple customer services actually referred me to my local Apple store and said that they were likely to do it for cheaper. I did a search for iPhone repairs and could only find the American fee from the Apple store, which was around $30. I assumed the Apple stores in the UK would offer a similar service too.

The replacement price is identical except for shipping whether to you take the iPhone to an Apple Store or ship it in. You don't have to pay an advance replacement fee if you go to an Apple Store; perhaps that's what she was referring to.

Any such charge you might have found was almost certainly not from an Apple Store. As I said, they do not repair iPhones, they replace them. At one time some a few Apple Stores were replacing just the glass, apparently as a test, but I've not heard of any doing so in a long time and I've never seen a price quoted on the web.

It is ridiculous that the Apple stores don't do replacements! I have found numerous people that have had problems with the glass smashing in the iPhone 4 and 4S, surely they can't just expect people to buy a replacement each time! I can't afford to pay £150 to get it fixed, that's half a months wages for me! 😟 I'm going to go back to O2 and see what they can do tomorrow anyway as I was having problems already with the phone freezing and overheating. Just think they are going to be less likely to help now they see the smashed back! Typical!

Thank you for the information varjak paw.
