I went to sync my daughters' ipod touches and both said they needed to have a software update. I accepted the software update, but both failed and said I needed to restore. I attempted to restore and both attempts failed... both screens now show the connect to iTunes screen. What is going on?

I am having a similar problem - I downloaded and my iPod touch sort of updated (I don't think the update ever went to completion) and then the next thing I know I needed to restore.
If you un-install and re-install Itunes, it will work. Unfortunately, it will restore the ipod back to factory settings though.
