First you need to ensure your iPhone is unlocked by your carrier in your current country

Then when in US visit a US carrier such as AT&T and purchase a contract

But you must ensure iPhone is legitimately unlocked by your carrier and for

your information no other agency or shop or ebay seller

can provide an unlock, only the carrier

If your phone is unlocked then you have various options in the USA. I suggest that you go with pre-pay. ATT GoPhone and T-Mobile have pre-pay. Once you understand the US carriers and how they work with the plans then you can convert to a monthly post-pay and still keep the same number.

Don't let ATT list your phone as an iPhone in the system or they will force you into a data plan and suck your money. If you want a data plan then fine. I have a smart phone but can get by on WiFi.

I have 2 unlocked iPhones (3GS and 4) and have ATT GoPhone. I told the service reps that they were unlocked and they tried to force me into a data plan. They finally got smart and did not tell the system that it was a iPhone and all was well.
