how to change iCloud account on iPhone, without deleting data on iPhone

I recently changed the email address associated with my Apple ID. In my iPhone, I have iCloud set to back up my phone's documents and data, but it has stopped working because it's still set up with my old email address. I read that in order to change it to my new email address, I have to delete the old iCloud account (under iPhone settings) and sign in with my new email address. However, when I press 'delete account' it gives me the warning: "If you delete your account, all documents stored in iCloud will be deleted from this iPhone." This is something I do NOT want, as there are documents and app data on my phone that I don't want to lose. (Some people on the forums were saying it gave them the option to keep all their data on their phone after they pressed delete. Mine did not--it only gave me the warning and a chance to cancel, so I assume Apple changed it between now and late last year when those comments were posted.)

So...

- First off, why would they make it this way??

- And more importlantly, how can I get around this? I just want iCloud to back up my iPhone using my new email address, without erasing data from my phone.

Thanks!

Joe

I am a self employed tree surgeon and after not being able to switch off from work, I have recently got a new iPhone for work use only and I am using our old iPhone for personal use. As all of my contacts, text messages and notes are mostly business and some personal, I used my old iCloud account to log into the new iPhone (business). I have also kept my old iPhone logged into the old iCloud account.

What I'd like to do is to log into my new iCloud account that will sync to my work iPad (also using new iCloud account) but keep all of the data (notes, text messages and contacts) on my new and old iPhone. When I have tried to log out of my iCloud account, it says "Keep a copy of your data on this iPhone?" but only gives me the options to store Contacts, Reminders & Safari. I need to store notes and messages and if its possible, Whatsapp.

I understand this is very complicated to read. End result would look like this:

New iPhone for Business:

Old data from old iCloud stored but logged into to new iCloud

Old iPhone for Personal:

Old data from old iCloud stored and logged into old iCloud.

In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")

When you delete your account, all the data that is synced with iCloud will also be deleted from the device (but not from iCloud), but will be synced back to your device when you login again.

Hi!

May be an old discussion, but need help about the same problem. Hope you could help :)

I needed to change my apple id... Pretty easy, but now my icloud account is not the same email address...

But since the IOS 7 update, i can't delete the icloud account without logging with the password.

But it keep saying invalid account or password beause the old appleid does'nt exist anymore!

So i can't delete it to change it! I can't even restore the phone, cause since IOS 7, you need to disable the locate my IPhone option... But to disable it, I need to enter the icloud password!!! :) so I'm kind of stucked :)

Is there anything I can do?

Thank you in advance!

I called Apple support and they managed to solve my problem 🙂

They gave me the following instructions:

1. Go to appleid.apple.com, press "Manage your Apple-ID" and write in your current apple-id and password.

2. Change your primary mailadress to your OLD mailadress (your old apple-id).

3. Log on to your old email and confirm.

4. Now you can write your ordinary password on iCloud in your iPhone, using your old apple-ID.

(Settings > iCloud)

5. If you would like to keep that apple-ID, you don't have to do anything else. If you rather want the previous apple-ID, you first delete the account on your iPhone.

6. Change back your primary email address as it was before (on appleid.apple.com), and log on to your email to confirm.

7. Now you can type in your current apple-ID account on iCloud. (Settings > iCloud)

This solved it for me anyways!

Sorry for the bad english 🙂
