Hello,

My Mac Pro has developed a habit of freezing (including mouse pointer) a while (some 10 minutes) after powering on the machine. After a forced restart the problem has disappeared for the rest of the day. On some days the computer spontaneously restarts a while after powering on and then the problem is more persistent, with the light on the front flashing and the machine not getting through powering up at all. What then helps is removing and putting back the video card. I have already replaced the video card with a new one, after which the problem had disappeared for several weeks, but now it is fully back again.

Several runs with TechTool Pro did not reveal any hardware problem.

Can someone advise on how to diagnose the freezes etc. or even how to solve it?

Below is an error report produced after a forced restart.

Thanks for any answers!

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least two independent backups.) Don’t erase the Lion recovery partition, if present.

It is not definitive, but that crash report has the look of an uncorrectable memory error.

You have omitted the list of kexts loaded, so it is difficult to determine whether you have known problem software loaded. The full report is large, but it is all text and would be more helpful.

Also, the side door is not interlocked, and can be removed while the Mac Is running so that you can look for error lights next to your memory modules. There are no hazardous Voltages accessible to your unaided fingers (per UL regulations) but components may be quite hot.

It is quite unattractive for me to have to transport this heavy machine to the closest Apple store. I'll first try to identify the faulty item and remove or replace is it if possible.

  • Jacob Eikelenboom Level 1 Level 1 (5 points)

    Thanks for the suggestions.

It is the full crash report produced by the Mac to be sent to Apple on forced restart after a freeze. Please, where can I find a list of kexts loaded?

  • Linc Davis Level 10 Level 10 (158,895 points)

You can try the Apple Hardware Test. It's not reliable.

  • japamac Level 7 Level 7 (24,390 points)

Remove the DIMMs from the A Riser, slots 3 and 4. That would be the pair of 2 GB DIMMs.

Try and replicate the crash with those DIMMs removed.

Thanks for posting that. I know it is a bit of work to get it.

It shows you have ONLY Apple kexts in your machine. so this problem cannot be blamed on third-party software. It is very likely to be an uncorrectable memory error.

The fault is a machine check, it is an uncorrected error, and several of the other registers have the look of an uncorrectable memory error.

Did you try the RAM reconfiguration as I suggested?

Have you used Memtest X to see if the errors emanate from the RAM?

The errors can be due to faulty RAM (common with FB-DIMMs) or due to damaged risers.

The errors can also be due to overheat (common with FB-DIMMs).

I will try your suggestions as soon the freezes and crashes return on me. Strangely, the problem disappears for a few days when I remove and put back the video card. I am not convinced that overheating is the cause since the freezes etc. only happen after about 10 to 15 minutes after start-up, irrespective of having logged in or not.

this is a 2008. Therefore it uses FBDIMMs too.

Both 2008s, which seem to be getting reported very often lately; and heat from FBDIMMs and that they do tend to suffer from 4 yrs of stress (cold-hot-cold cycles are very stressful, and they generate a lot of heat, each DIMM uses 10-15W and needs to be kept below 72*C, one reason to use SmcFanControl 2.3+ and Hardware Monitor).

MCA error-reporting registers = RAM error.

You took out the 2 x 2GB for a period? okay, now swap and uses those and pull the 4 x 1GB.

And for $100 Amazon has 4x2GB set, they are 'only' 667MHz but good quality and proper Mac Pro etc - ideal is of course 8 DIMMs for best memory bandwidth regardless.

The ATI 4870s don't get mentioned much, so that should be hopeful it is fine.

TechTool Pro: have yet to see/hear of it really finding hardware problems - owned since it was MacEKG too sadly - but I would still run memtest or its GUI cousin Rember.

AHT: if the Riser, motherboard, or thermal sensor was the cause, or you had parity errors it would, but not much else otherwise.

The trouble with those restarts is they really should be followed by Safe Boot once, and then a restart. Whatever temp and cache files were written will be recreated and those use and can be the source of trouble, plus recheck the journal and directory in the process.

How old the disk drive, when last initialized, and if a full media scan for bad sectors was ever done too in the course of ruling out and troubleshoot steps.

I like to see any computer, esp. these, on 850W or better UPS definitely. And not sharing the outlet or circuit with much else (ie, nothing heavy either like room a/c).

Bad cache, cache-to memory sync, so bad processor or mem controller
