Waiting for disks to reappear

I carried out a 7 pass secure erase on a lacie 250GB external drive but disk utility seems to be hanging 'waiting for disks to reappear'. I use a macbook pro and snow leopard, I note a few other comments on this in the forums but no answers as of yet... Just putting it back out there.. The disk is still connected and disk utility still running.. Any suggestions?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
