I am running osx 10.6.8 which i down loaded from the app store. I am having problems with one of my email accounts requiring the password all the time so following advice on hear am trying to accsess the keychain but for some reason can not find it in utilities. Can some one please help Thanks

Just a minor correction. Unless I'm badly out of date -- I've never once visited the App Store -- you didn't get the 10.6.8 update from the App Store. You would have gotten it from Apple Downloads or Software Update.
You aren't seeing Keychain Access.app in Applications>Utilities?
Should be there. If and when you find it, run Keychain First Aid from the menu.
EDIT: actually, if you really got your OS from the App Store, it would have been Lion 10.7. something, and you aren't running Snow Leopard, 10.6, which cannot be downloaded anywhere. It's on DVD.
Click once on the Apple icon in the menubar>about this Mac. This will tell you what OS version you have.

Sorry stand corrected (i tried to buy lion but computer was lacking in memoary ). in application /utilties all i have is adobe utilities and java preferences , i do remeber there being more there but that was a while ago and have done many updates since so unless there has been some changes or i have developed a bug. What ever has happened i need advice on how to fix the issue.
I don't know how that could have happened, but what you probably need to do right now is to reinstall Snow Leopard from the install DVD. Just choose install, not erase and install. This will give you new system files, while preserving everything else. This will probably go OK, but if you have a backup, that would be better.
After doing this, which will give you the version as of the install DVD, use Sofware Update to get back to 10.6.8 and anything else that requires updating. Or you can just download and install the 10.6.8 Combo update.
Thanks for that but if I do that will it not double up all files thus taking up more space on my hard drive ? If pos I would like to ovoid this if pos.
There are two Applications folders, one in your root directory and one in your User directory. The easiest way to find Keychain is to click on the Spotlight (looks like a magnifying glass) in the top right of your screen.
Type 'Keychain' and you should see it listed. Click on it from there.
No cant find keychain there either, i think there is some thing gone very wrong some where. I think its correct i need to reinstall snow lepord but just dont want to end up with doubles of osx files and dont really want to delet every thing if possible.

No. The Snow Leopard installer is not like the installer for earlier OS versions. It does not have either an erase & install or an archive & install option, just a single "install" option that, when applied to a volume that already has Snow Leopard installed, will just replace the existing OS & bundled apps with fresh copies. It won't duplicate anything.
But before doing that, make sure you are looking in the right place for the Utilities folder. One way to do that is while you are in Finder, select "Utilities" from the "Go" menu.
Right all utilities are back after reinstalling snow leopard. Thanks for all the help now just to work out why one of my email accounts password is not being saved. Fix one problem to start on another. Lol
