It is a hardware problem.  Either the Wi-Fi antenna has become disconnected inside the device or it has failed.

No that's incorrect.  This happened after the iOS updated.  I had wifi on my phone (brand new iPhone 4s - bought it last week) and I had wifi until apple pushed out the new iOS. NOw it's grayed out.

Try restoring in iTunes BUT use a fresh firmware and do not add any backups alongside. You could also try doing this:

    1.) go into settings

    2.) General

    3.) Reset

    4.) Reset network settings

That might work and good luck :)

Already did the reset network settings - that doesn't work.

Try doing the update in iTunes as a last resort. If that still doesn't work you could try taking it into an Apple store at a genius bar appointment, I'm sure they'll help you out even if your out of warranty because they're really good like that.

    Good luck :)

this is getting ridicules....this problem is due to the IOS 5.1 upgrade....there are several thousand folks that have this issue and as of now no soluion that I can find....

The answer to take it to the Apple store is a joke...or to see everyone pasting the link from the support site is also a joke...

They need to fess up to their error and get out a fix asap...

If anyone knows of a fix let this forum know.

    Thanks

I experience the same problem. It was alright until one day wi-fi stopped to find networks. I switched iPhone off and on and now I have this thing greyed out saying No Wi-Fi. Any solutions found?

I've the same problem no wifi and its greyed.

The device is IPHONE 4S, purchased in Feb 2012, upgraded to 5.1.1 in June 2012, and was working properly, till it can't connect to any wifi network. I restarted it then I found this problem.

I tried all kinds of reset (Network Settings, erase all content & settings, reset all settings), then restored to factory settings, and restored to older backup but the problem not solved.

I bought it from KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), now I'm in Egypt and there are no Apple offices here.

    Any suggestion is highly appreciated.

Franzi86:  This solution will sound ridiculous but it seems to work for me.  I've been having this problem on and off for several months now.

If your iPhone 4S feels unusally hot it probably is.  This happens when you use several different apps.  All you have to do it put your phone is the freezer for about 5 minutes and the problem will solve itself.  I've been keeping a journal for awhile now and and it really works.

    Hope this helps.

As I stated in your other post, this doesn't work.

Known issue on iphone -- Apple will replace your iPhone if you still have this issue and it's under warranty.

put the iphone in a ziplock bag in the freezer for 5-10 minutes sounds crazy but it worked for me!

Same here. Wifi suddenly stops and the swich grayed out. I've put my iphone 4s is a ziplock bag, 10 minutes in the freezer, reboot. And wifi worked again. Don't know why but it does work.
