Hi, I just got my new Mac mini (Intel Core Duo) but geep getting graphic distortions on my window borders.
Everything is ok after startup but e.g. after using Front Row the space surrounding a window (where the window shadow usually is) is distorted. Front Row seem to be one trigger for this problem but I have also seen it after using other programs.
Has anyone seen this. Is there a fix besides sending it back to Apple?
Re: I don't use Dock Hiding or Magnification ... guess that doesn't help you.
No it actually every bit of feed back helps. It was just a theory as a lot of Mini owners also have their Dock Icons distorted via this bug.
As to pushing your one Gig of memory too hard. I opened just about every application (Rosetta, Universal) and did just about everything I could think of to trigger the distortion and nothing happened, but I know it still lurks somewhere in my System.
I have the Dock on w/ magnification. I have tried everything to get the corrupted shadows again, but have not been able to since I installed the 1.0.1 firmware update.
Before the update, it was doing it fairly regularly in normal use. Now, nothing.
Well since setting up another User Account and playing around with it for a few hours I'm not back in my Normal Account and I haven't had any problems for about 24 hours.
The only other thing I've done is install the Garage Band update.

Is it possible that every one you has the error had installed the parallels software ?
Because a friend of mine noticed it right after he installed parallels.
And even if you delete the application...the KEXTs still run and could cause this error.
I've got Parallels installed, but no Boot Camp. The only 3rd Party software that I have installed at the moment is as follows:
* Camino
* Cocktail
* Firefox
* Handbrake
* Intego (NetBarrier, VirusBarrier, NetUpdate, Personal Backup)
* Logitech Control Center 2.0
* MySQL 5.0.20a
* OpenBase (Installed as part of the XCode Tools)
* Parallels (Workstation Beta 5, VM Compressor RC)
* Speed Download 4
* Text Wrangler
* Transmit
Maybe if we can all look at
common 3rd Party items, maybe this can help find the source, if it is in fact 3rd Party items that are causing the issue.
This seems (From what i've read on different threads) to be a problem with certain programs taking the ram from the comp to use it as Video Memory. When ram is "Borrowed"/"Returned" like this, it can sometimes "Get stuck" along the way which could theoritacly distort certain effects. Your graphics card is set to only take 64MB of the video ram and never surpass that ammount... But, if you need it for a ram intensive task the computer might try to handle the task (Photoshop and other video intensive programs)by removing certain effects which would even occur on 1GB of ram and possibly 2GB (Because the card is in need of ram not the PC it self) but more often with 512 making this the most logical explanation i can think of. This however, is not part of apple's design and would be a "Bug" which i'm sure should be fixed in an upcoming patch. Unfortunately, we are kinda Beta testing Intel Macs and testing their limits/potential and errors, in a way Intel mac users are lucky because future software will be optomized for us but until then, were going to be full of bugs like this so just be patient and hope for a fix.
I'm not a mac user (yet- getting my Intel Solo mini in a month) but from what you described this might also be due to OpenGL or DirectX (your freindly graphics rendering programs) so try updating that. Rolling back then re updating the intergrated drivers might do it too.
You can also try a google search and see what you can find. I'll try checking out and see if I can find a solution or defenite cause. Also, if you live close to a store that sells minis or apples computers (London drugs, Computer store or your best option an apple store) ask about it there they may have got similar complaints and could give you a cause.
I wish it was as simple as downloading newer versions of OpenGL and Display Drivers, but unfortunately, Apple is in control of these drivers - there are no Intel Drivers.
As to rolling back and re-installing applicable updates, as can be seen from this thread, it has been done and the issue re-occurs.
A couple of posters here have raised bug reports with Apple, and they are currently being investigated. Let's just hope they sort it out and publish an update to the appropriate drivers / kext's sooner rather than later (such as the new Keyboard / Mouse Update).
Thanks, and great to hear that your getting a Mac!!
