How do I make my unsupported Epson Expression 800 artist scanner work in OS 10.5? Partitioning?

I have an Epson Expression 800 scanner which became non-functioning when I updated to OS 10.5. I have tried Vue Scan, doesn't work. Am wondering if I can partition my G4MDD HD and install OS 10.4 on it to get the scanner working again?

OS isn't noted below, but am running 10.5.8 on it right now.

PowerMac, iOS 5.1.1, running 10.5.8,

In System Profiler does anything show under SCSI?

If you need 10.4.x to run it, I suggest an external Firewire drive to boot from & install 104.x to.

Yes.

That is how I run my Coolscan slide scanner; boot to a Tiger partion on an internal drive in my Quicksilver and scan away.....

Otherwise, as suggested, an external firewire drive (a bit slower than your ATA/100 bus) or even a second internal drive.

You may have as many bootable drives or volumes as you wish to install , connect or create.

Hi BDAqua,

Thank you for the swift reply. I am wondering why you would suggest an external HD, rather than partitioning? I have a firewire HD, but would like the streamlined process of a partition. Or am I misguided on that? Any thoughts? I like knowing what I do is the best practice.

Also, since I backed my 10.4.11 system onto my external HD, do I need the physical disks for 10.3.9 in order to upgrade to 10.4 and so on onto the partition? Can I just drag the folder that has 10.4.11 in it from my external HD to the partition as is, in toto? Does this take a bunch of time?

Also, assuming I'm going to partition, do I need to set up a separate password, etc, to get to the new partitioned area I want for scanning? May seem like a simple question, but I'm trying to foresee the possible way things will actually look. Is there a lot of set-up of operating this-and-thats I should know about beforehand?

Thank you so much for the advice. I truly appreciate it, as will my wallet of I don't have to shell out $3000.00 for a replacement scanner, enticing though the notion...My expression 800 artist scanner works just fine for my purposes.

My HD is one terrabyte, with 885 gigs free. I'm sure it would support 10.4.11 size wise. I will use this method. It makes sense not to take up space on my G4.It's a 1.6GHz dual processor, with 2 GB of memory.

So, if I am using my HD for the drive to operate my scanner, then I would need to make it my startup preference, right? Also, is the folder that contains the backup of my old system enough as reference 10.4? Or do I need a physical installation disk for 10.4 or 10.3? Can the OS be updated just the same as my tower?

Thanks for your patience. I know just enough to be dangerous, so I'm asking a lot of maybe obvious questions.

since I backed my 10.4.11 system onto my external HD, do I need the physical disks for 10.3.9 in order to upgrade to 10.4 and so on onto the partition?

No. You may use a cloning utility such a SuperDuper.

Can I just drag the folder that has 10.4.11 in it from my external HD to the partition as is, in toto?

No. Use the cloning utility. In this way, the hidden files, the unnecessary files and the proper links and such will all be taken care of to creat an identical, bootable volume.

Does this take a bunch of time?

The initial creation (duplication) varies on the size of the volume being cloned. From 15 minutes to an hour is common.

assuming I'm going to partition, do I need to set up a separate password, etc, to get to the new partitioned area I want for scanning?

If you clone, when you boot to the new partition, you will use the same password.

Even if you install new, you may set the same password.

then I would need to make it my startup preference, right?

Either that, or, hold Option (Alt on Windows keyboards) when you start up. This brings up the Startup Manager and allows you to choose which volume to boot to.

Also, is the folder that contains the backup of my old system enough as reference 10.4?

As long as the backup is bootable, you may clone it to another drive or even just boot to it.

Or do I need a physical installation disk for 10.4 or 10.3? Can the OS be updated just the same as my tower?

Consider each new hard drive or each new partition as another "computer". The thing is, all these reside within the same machine.

So, which each new drive or volume, you install and set up your OS as you did when you first bought and setup your computer.

All these new systems can reside in one machine. You may boot between them at will, but cannot run two (or more) at the same time.

If you use clone utilities such as SuperDuper, then you only need to install an OS and applications once.

After that, using the clone utility, you can recreate a duplicate at anytime, and use the utility to keep an identical backup, to which you may also boot.

Use the Startup manager to choose which you wish to boot to, and leave the Startup drive preference in the system preferences set to the drive/volume that you use the most.

Good to ask questions! 🙂

Plenty of space on the drive for Tiger then.

Yes, either Tiger as Startup Disk, or hold Option/alt key at restart or bootup to choose it.

Also, is the folder that contains the backup of my old system enough as reference 10.4? Or do I need a physical installation disk for 10.4 or 10.3?

Unless that's a complete clone you'll need to Install all over again.

Can the OS be updated just the same as my tower?

Sorry, not sure what you're asking. 🙂

Well, I ran across my 10.2 install dvd that came with the machine. I remembering upgrading to 10.3 paid download, and then to 10.4.11 in a paid download. I located the system backup that has 10.4.11 on it. Is there a way to make this work for me, or should I just take the whole shebang to the repair genius and have them do it? Feels like the waters are rising...

You have been getting stellar advice from two of the most knowledgeable, experienced and helpful contributors. I'd never presume to be in their league, and both of them have helped me tremendously over the years.

On the other hand, I'd like to ask you a single question: Do you really need Leopard 10.5.x at all?

The reason for that is that I have dual boot partitions for 10.4.11 and for 10.5.8, but I find myself running 10.4.11 exclusively, simply because Tiger 10.4.11 beats the pants off Leopard 10.5.8 on my g5 Quad performance-wise. I also have an Epson Expression scanner that runs just as well under Leopard as it runs under Tiger. It's just that Tiger is definitely snappier. I kept Leopard for "just in case", but I've never needed it.

Below are my machine's specs:

2.5 GHz Power Mac (PPC) G5-Quad; 16GB RAM; mutant, flashed 550MHz nVidia GeForce 7800GTX 1,700MHz 512MB VRAM; ATTO ExpressPCI UL5D LP SCSI card; Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 and Leopard 10.5.8 boot drives; Spotblight, Dashboard and Time Machine permanently disabled; dual 22" CRT monitors; USB wireless 'n' available but connected to the Internet via wired Ethernet; FW flatbed scanner; 2 SCSI scanners (one tabloid-size transparency scanner [Epson Expression 836XL] and a film scanner); various internal & external HDs; FW Epson 2200 and Ethernet Samsung ML-2850ND printers; 2 X Back-UPS RS 1500 XS units.

VueScan version 9.0.86, which I'll upade to 9.0.94 in a few minutes.

You should also read the latest Release Notes on the VueScan page, just in case you want to make your scanner work inLeopard:

If you're using a Ratoc Firewire-SCSI adapter, you may need to configure one of the options. Try setting the time between the power on and the SCSI bus reset to 40.

If you're using the Ratoc USB->SCSI adapter, set up the adapter with the Ratoc utility to "Mass Storage" mode.

If you're using a SCSI scanner on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), have an Adaptec 2906 or 2930CU SCSI controller and your SCSI scanner isn't working properly, try the following commands in the terminal window:

  • cd /System/Library/Extensions
  • sudo mv Adaptec290X-2930.kext Adaptec290X-2930.kext.sav
  • reboot the computer

To restore this change:

• cd /System/Library/Extensions

• sudo mv Adaptec290X-2930.kext.sav Adaptec290X-2930.kext

• reboot the computer

If VueScan still doesn't see your scanner, go into "System Preferences", "Accounts", then "Startup Items". Make sure nothing is being started that might be accessing the scanner (i.e. "Epson Scanner Monitor").

If you have a SCSI scanner but don't have a SCSI adapter, try using the Ratoc Firewire->SCSI adapter.
