Mini wont update on my computer

So I could use some help here....please.
When I plug my ipod mini into my computer, it will charge, but it wont do the normal updating that it should do. It's supposed to say do not disconnect till finished, or something like that. but it's not updating. but it's charging, so I know it's connected to my computer. Please help! I would GREATLY appreciate it.
