Question About Final Cut Pro X....

Hi, I need to know if my Mid-2009 MacBook Pro(no configurations) can use Final Cut X? I'm planning to get a Samsung SpinPoint M8 5400RPM 1TB HDD for my MacBook Pro and 2x 4GB of RAM, will it work if I don't upgrade? And will it work if I upgrade?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Graphics Card:

NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory

Processor:

2.26GHz or 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3MB on-chip shared L2 cache running 1:1 with processor speed

1066MHz frontside bus

RAM:

2GB (two 1GB SO-DIMMs)

And also, do you think a USB external HDD is good enough, I don't care about the speed....

I always used FW 400/800 until a couple of years ago when I bought some incredibly cheap USB 2.0 hard drives and have never looked back.

No problems of any sort but then I don't have dozens of layers of composited video.

I have done 4 angle multicam using DV and most of my edits are HDV or AVCHD and/or ProRes 422 with effects, transitions and the odd connected clips and titles etc.

I must stress that I have only used the hard drives with their own powerpacks that spin at 7,200rpm and not the bus powered ones of 5,400rpm but I should imagine they would be OK too. (Don't buy one without checking it out though)

As Tom suggested, don't use your internal system hard drive any more for storing Projects and Events.

When you import footage or create a project you are given the opportunity to select any of your hard drives.

You should always select the extenal one, not just because it has more space but because it is more efficient.

Getting your system drive to run both the FCP X app and the projects and the events puts quite a strain on it.

By using an external for the projects and events you are splitting the load making it more efficient and faster.
